The city got its name from the ancient word "Erpha", which means "brown water". And this brown water refers to the color of the small river Gera that runs through Erfurt. Erfurt became the state capital of Thuringia in 1991. The population of the city is about 200,000. The city is 320 km southwest of Berlin.
