Xanax XR (alprazolam) is in a group of drugs called benzodiazepines (ben-zoe-dye-AZE-eh-peens). Alprazolam affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety.

Xanax is a short-acting drug. Xanax XR or Xanax Extended Release is a long-acting drug. Xanax is taken several times a day while Xanax XR is taken only once a day. Xanax XR is more expensive than Xanax.

Xanax XR treats anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and anxiety caused by depression. Xanax XR may also be used for others not listed in this medication guide.
