A romantic and action packed story of three best friends, a group of high end art thieves, who come into trouble when a love-triangle forms between them.
Once a Thief is an action/comedy/romance movie involving the plight of three master thieves (in the mode of Pink Panther). All three were raised by the same father and in fact were most certainly street orphans. The story begins with a successful art heist followed by a pledge to make this the last crime ever for the trio. The plot revolves around the theft of a mysterious "cursed" painting and how its obsession affects the family.
In the world of high-class art thievery, grace counts. And these three certainly have it down pat. Chow Yun-Fat hams it up a bit this time, playing clown to the others' more serious relationship. Overall, great fun... but what the hell's that ending about?
This is not a deep movie. This not a serious movie. Come expecting some fine fluff, and you will be rewarded with exactly that.

I've read HK movies described as schizophrenic [& I DO like them very much, because they are not predictable], but I think multiple personality better describes this one. At first one, it looks like a breezy art-theft caper movie out of the 1960s...but not for long.

Too many bodies--faceless and without personality, to be sure, collect for the breezy label to fit...but then...then there is the dancing scene. You ain't been nowhere and you ain't seen nothing until you have seen Chow Yun-fat dancing in a wheelchair. The whole movie may be worth this scene alone.
