Before entering art school, Rick Kane sets out to surf the big wave season on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii, after winning a surfing contest in an Arizona wave pool by his home. Once in Hawaii, he immediately finds out that he knows nothing about the local habits, customs, or pecking order which cause him some starting problems. After being robbed by the local surf gang, he has a chance meeting with famous surfboard shaper Chandler, and after figuring out they have an artistic connection, Chandler offers Rick a place to sleep and something to eat. Chandler teaches him how to "read" the big waves and the difference between 'soul surfers' and those who surf for fame and money. He also manages to get the attention of a beautiful young native, which further stirs the pot with the "locals" but in the end gives him the courage and determination to take what he has learned from Chandler and surf the big waves like he had dreamed he could.
Come on, people! the "Surfin' movie" comprises one of the most worn-out of all genres! There is nothing new about this- the only differences I can see between junk like this and the Annette Funacello "beach party" films of the early 1960s are are that 1.)those earlier films were pure comedy with a little drama and this one is the opposite, and 2.)those flicks were generally set in southern Cali.

The scenery is nice, and if you like to gaze at blond, "surfin' dude" muscleboys, this will do it for you (being gay, I do.) Otherwise, pick-up a copy of "Beach Blanket Bingo" or "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini." If you have had any exposure to surfing, rent this flick (or watch it on TNT!). Before watching, keep in mind that this is a surfing movie made in 1987, so its going to throw you off a little bit. Make sure you don't take this movie seriously or you will hate it. My friend and I were laughing hysterically... (One scene when Chandler is walking in after surfing has a boogie boarder yell "whoooaaa!" and fly off his board in the background, while another surfer rides lame whitewater all the way to sand just to be in the background of this scene). Overall, the lines are corny, cheesy, and hilarious. For example, when the shaper says, "Turtle- you shaped this? Want to come surfing with us?" and I swear its like watching a 4 year old. My only complaint was that they could have cut out a lot of the love scenes considering this isn't really a movie to be taken seriously (although that chick is cute!).

For a lighthearted laugh and flashback to the 80's, rent this movie. Oh yeah, did I mention how bitchin the soundtrack is??
