Plot mastermind Sheikh Fateh al Masri, a senior al Qaeda commander, was killed by one of the missiles last Saturday. The British suspect was killed on September 8 but the news has just been made public.

Robert Wainwright, director of the EU's criminal intelligence organisation Europol, said it proved the danger from Islamic extremists remained high.

He said: "There has been a significant decline in the number of terrorist attacks in Europe certainly committed by Islamist groups that hides the reality that these groups are still active. The threat is still out there as these reports show."
