An innocent man becomes one of the most wanted criminals the world has ever known.
Though recognized for heroism as a lad, Ned Kelly can not escape the stigma of being the eldest of a brood sired by a known criminal. In days when an arrest equaled guilt and a conviction, his unfair imprisonment for horse thievery puts him steadfast, in the eyes of Victorian police, on the wrong side of things for life. With a sister unable to dissuade the unwanted advances of Constable Fitzpatrick, Ned, his brother Dan, and friends Joe Byrne and Steve Hart soon find themselves labeled "an outlaw gang" by the less-than-honorable constable. It's a designation they're apt to live up to after Ned's mother is unfairly arrested and sentenced to three years hard labor. In retaliation, the Kelly Gang strikes out against the oppressive Victorian government, with ultimately tragic results and passage into Australian folklore.
Ned Kelly will go down in my life as one of the single worst movies I have ever seen. Now some may think that harsh but I can assure you this is not the case. Plagued with historical inaccuracy this film seems to romanticize almost everything about the life of Ned Kelly. I was talked into going to this film with some friends but having sat through an hour I walked out of the cinema so positively infused with rage at the overly dramatized plot, hollow acting and massacre of truth. To be fair I thought perhaps I should give it another chance, I rented the DVD and it was just as horrible as I recalled Fast Forwarding to about the 50 minute mark I continued to watch cinema suffer. Admittedly the costumes, sets and special effects were done to a relatively good standard, not accurate but impressive none the less. Cinematography was also for the most part well done however I still think that there is no way that the admittedly well done technical wizardry could make up for the positively painful plot of this movie. If you do have a couple of hours spare to for this movie I suggest you buy the DVD, put it in the microwave and watch the crazy cool light show for about a minute, sure it is very dangerous, but if you die at least you won't have wasted your time with this junk heap of a movie as I did.

(having said that for some reason a lot of other people seem to like it so maybe it is just me and the critics) A mate insisted we go see this movie NED KELLY while I was on vacation in Australia. I was hesitant because I knew nothing about Ned Kelly. Less than five minutes into the movie I was captivated! Despite the fact that I had never heard of Ned or The Kelly Gang, I quickly took interest and have since visited tourist attractions with Ned Kelly artifacts. The movie is supposedly pretty well done in terms with keeping true to the story. Without giving anything away, I will simply say it's a must see. I hope it comes out in the US soon so I can see it again with friends and family.
Since Ned Kelly -- which is not terrible, just too often dull -- has a no-expense-spared feel to it, this Focus Features release can be regarded only as an opportunity missed.
