About This Game

Natural Selection 2 pits alien against human in an action-packed struggle for survival. Wield devastating weaponry as a Frontiersman marine, or become the xenomorph as a deadly Kharaa lifeform.

Strategy Meets Shooter

Natural Selection 2 is a First Person Shooter and Real Time Stategy game rolled into one! Each team, alien and human, has a Commander. The Commander looks down on the battlefield and issues orders, places structures, collects resources, researches technology, and deploys abilities.

Here are some gameplay examples: A human Commander could drop health packs and ammunition to a trapped marine squad, and deploy sentry guns to help them defend their position. Or an alien Commander could grow a new Hive to spread infestation throughout newly captured territory, allowing more alien eggs to spawn...

Two Unique Sides

Aliens players choose to evolve into one of five lifeforms: The fast, fearsome Skulk can run on walls and deliver massive damage with its jaws. Lerks fly and deploy gasses to support their teammates in battle. Gorges heal other lifeforms and build tunnels, hydra turrets, walls, and other tactical structures. Fades blink in and out of battle, picking off marines with giant scythes. Finally, the giant Onos is so massive and so tough, that even entire marine squads can't take it down.

Marines wield rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers, pistols, and other weapons. Cluster grenades can clear ventilation shafts of sneaky Skulks, flamethrowers make short work of alien structures and infestation, and boosts dropped by the Commander increase combat effectiveness.

When attacking on foot doesn't cut it, marines can construct hulking Exosuits wielding miniguns and railguns, and equip jetpacks for high speed assaults on alien Hives.

People take this game way too seriously and it's not very noob friendly. If you don't have any friends to play it with, then you might have a bad time, because you will be yelled at for making the smallest of mistakes. The gameplay itself is fun and a really cool concept; we need more games of this sort, though it feels a little unbalanced at times.. Just Buy It. Fantastic game, unique genre blend. Runs ~120fps on my 4y/o hardware. Always active servers. Players are really, really nice. Wide variety of skill levels in current playerbase.. **TLDR**:Buy this game, try both sides, know within 90 minutes if you like its gameplay, AND EITHER BUCKLE UP OR REFUND, but 9.99 is a pretty safe bet.

I'm going to be honest, I've had this game since it dropped on Steam and I had completely forgotten how old it was. It shows on the total population, but the feel of the game and its updates keeps it from ever going stale. The true strength of this game is how unique it is. As an asymmetrical FPS RTS PvP game, it definitely fills a niche. This is also its weakness, however because it demands certain skills that you wont find in other games (Other than the ability to shoot straight). This steep skill curve keeps many people from enjoying the game early on, as they are too busy being stomped by people who have played the game for hundreds of hours. Keep heart however, as many servers balance in favors of rookies, still giving you a significant chance at victory. The road will be rough: there will be MANY deaths, there will be MUCH salt, and lastly there WILL BE people who have played this game SO long they've forgotten what its like to be new. At its new base price of 9.99 you would be insane to not at least try this gem on sale. They still push out new content and patches (real ones) frequently. Additionally, I find it interesting how many of THEIR VIDEOS ACTUALLY MAKE THE GAME LOOK WORSE. Many of the videos have been slowed down, and it appears graphics have been lowered to keep the video smooth enough in order to slow them down. I have actually bought extra copies of this game to hand out to friends if they were at all interested. I just wait for it to sell for like 3$ then pick up some copies. Over the past 7 years its had some nice sales

End of Rant: Every match feels unique and I have never grown tired of this game, I only wish I had more friends to play it with.. probably one of the most unique and replayable games on steam. Every match will be different no matter what side you're playing. steep learning curve for new players but simply playing the tutorial and asking people questions will help you understand the mechanics and how the game works. using a mic is the best way to go because without it communications between your team is much slower and you need to stop whatever you're doing to relay the message. commanders should pretty much always have a mic especially the marines. but it shouldn't prevent you from having a good match. teamwork is essential for a win, no lone wolves here. but it does astound me when new players don't know how to do simple things like open their map or complain about getting their asses munched by skulks when they're rushing the base and refuse to listen to the comm. or even skipping the tutorials and jumping straight into a game with no idea how to play and wonder why they always die/lose.

its a great game and new players shouldn't be discouraged to play because they get destroyed, you've just gotta learn the game and use your brain to approach situations instead of mindlessly running into enemy controlled rooms expecting to slaughter everything.. Natural Selection 2 is a terrific and unique game. It's a asymmetric multiplayer FPS with RTS elements. Both teams feature several players who play the game in a FPS setting and one player on each team will play as the Commander from a RTS perspective. The commander will be in charge of building infrastructure, researching new technologies, expanding and support their players on the battlefield.

The players should work together, especially with their commander since they have a better overall perspective on what is happening.

Every player and team has ressources. There are several ressource node on the map which can be claimed by building ressource extractors (short: RT) on them. It is vital to build AND HOLD! as many of these as you can. Each player on the ground will get 0.1 ressources from each RT every few seconds while the commander gets 1 full mineral from every RT (since he needs to spend a lot more).

This game relies heavily on cooperation and teamwork. You will not get far by running into multiple enemies guns blazing unless your team is severaly ahead in tech. Work with your commander, defend RT's and stay vigilant.

When you first start the game will seem very biased towards the Alien team. This is because the game is balanced around Marines being able to aim properly and many people will need some time to get used to this. So don't be surprised if Aliens win often. This is less of an issue in rookie servers, because people don't know how the game works, but until you hit the very high ranks you might notice a alien favor.

The game averages around 250 players online at all times, which is quite nice considering it's age and since most servers have 16-20 player slots this results in quite a few servers that area still active. Should you buy this game try to play in servers marked as green, these are rookie servers intended for beginners, that high rank players can't join. You will lose your rookie status after about 20 hours of playtime but you are free to join the real servers before that.

Overall I would rate this game a 8.5 out of 10. It runs very well these days, load times are excellent, most players are helpful though there are some toxic ones as in every online game.

If you like the game spread the word so we can grow this community together.

Disclaimer: I've only played about 100 hours, so I'm by no means an expert. I might have gotten things wrong or explained them wrong.. This game is criminally underrated.
It's one of the most engaging, "asynchronous" tactical shooters. Or is it a strategic shooter? A bit of both, I imagine, let me explain: While most players in a game will experience it from a first person perspective, one player in each team takes the role of the commander. For the commander this plays more like an RTS game, you will have to place structures, give orders to units and conquer the enemy base. But all your units are controlled by players, resulting in the commander being dependent on players following his/her orders, while all the "units" are dependent on the commander expanding their base and researching upgrades.
Furthermore, there are two factions: The Zerg and the Terr- uh, I mean the Colonial Marines and the Alie-, god damnit, the Ultramarines and the Tyrani-... well, you know what I mean. Depending on how much resource nodes you controll, you will earn resources that you can spend on new weaponry for the Marines and new "evolutionary stages" for the alien faction, which results in both factions starting as pathetic little pawns that evolve into massive hulks of heavy artillery and tentacles.
The maps are very reminiscent of the Alien movies, with narrow steel corridors flanked by pipes, vents and so on, creating an eerie sci-fi-horror atmosphere. Most of them are rather large, with several bigger rooms that pose as additional bases once your faction managed to capture them. Also you will notice, the more rooms are owned by the aliens, the more zergcreep-ish slime will cover the map, which is a nice visual feedback for your progress as alien player.

The only thing I dislike is that this game is rather hard to to master, I played for 30 hours at this point and still die like a little scrub. But that's okay, death in this game is significantly less frustrating than in most multiplayer shooters, since it heavily correlates to your weapon upgrades, evolutionary stage, and disposable resources at hand. Don't expect your K/D to reflect your CoD skills.
Also, despite being hard to get into, the community is amazing. Since each round is basically an immense act of logistics and planning, coordinating several individual players as well as expanding your base and reacting to enemy actions, voice chat is an essential part of gameplay, so don't be afraid to use your mic.

TL;DR: I die like a ♥♥♥♥♥, and still enjoy the living hell out of this game.
