Grounding techniques help bring you back into the present moment. Being present can help decrease stress and anxiety responses in your body. Mindfulness techniques are used by psychologists all over Australia. Our Director, Jodie Brenton alongside our team of psychologists work to made information on mindfulness easily accessible by the Australian public.
Life Resolutions Psychologist Mary Magalotti shares some helpful ideas you can try at home:
Psychologist Mary Magalotti’s Grounding Techniques
Mindful Breath Triangle
Try to focus on your breathing, breathe in for a count of 3, hold for a count of 3, breathe out for a count of 3 and hold for a count of 3. Repeat this 5-10 times.
Run Cold Water Over Your Hands
Feel the cool sensation of the water and listen to the different sounds it makes as you move your hands.
Sense Your Senses
Take the time and list 3 things you can feel/touch, 3 things you can hear and 3 things you can see.
Muscle Release
Starting with your toes and moving upwards, tense for 3 seconds and release every muscle. Focus on each part of your body as you tense, and release.
