Meet The Rocket Surgeons : MatchyGotchy happened as a result of Matchy Star. While working with Matchy Star, we wanted to give these cute characters a life of their own. This is where the idea of interacting with them as virtual pets came into the Matchyverse. Matchy Star is the original character, and he explores the Alpha System where he meets all the other stars on the way. Originally called gems, as part of a match 3 design, eventually they all became characters instead and we call them Stars now thanks to MatchyGotchy. The stars were given a purpose in space, they want to grow to become rocket surgeons. It comes from that quirky mix of rocket science and brain surgery, commonly used as a light hearted and fun take joke to suggest high intelligence or higher qualifications. Each of their own have their specific jobs though, and also their own personalities. Just like any virtual pet experience, they have their own growth and different phases of it. Smol Egg We decided to make the Stars hatch as a fond reference to tamagotchies from back then. There is no care to the egg, as we initially intended to make MatchyGotchy a short and intuitive experience to introduce the characters. In MatchyGotchy, its just a transitional phase that requires no care taking we are revisiting this concept for MatchyGotchy Z! Tiny Baby. Stars are born without any outfit, or any skills. They are smart cookies though, so they are drawn to build ships in order to become a rocket surgeon they slowly pick up on productivity as they grow up. At first, its a learning curve, just about the same it is for the player learning how to take care of their stars. Awkward Teenager. The are halfway into full productivity and job purpose. Once they level up, they dont only grow in size but also acquire part of their main outfit. It knd of looks a tad off, which is the reason why it fits so well the idea of being a teenager in those awkward years while growing up. At this stage they require a bit less of undivided attention but they get distracted and sick much easier. Rocket Surgeon. They finally reach their normal size, full clothing, and a range of productivity which they do not while babies. As they continue to work, they peak in speed at their job they get better and now you can use your stars to build up ships to get to Xanadu. They become a bit more independent and work their very best. Just like any tamagotchi-like experience, they need food and care to grow. They can also get sick, they sleep and in MatchyGotchy, they can also die with bad care. We originally designed six actions, food and snacks, a traditional left/right game, cleaning, health and selfies. Cycling through these as needed will allow your Star to be fully productive and grow as they should to become Rocket Surgeons. Including selfies, they are part of the entertainment factor Stars need. There are a total of seven Stars, and each star has a particular task as a rocket surgeon. Lets meet the Rocket Surgeons: MATCHY STAR AS AN ALL-DIMENSIONAL MASTER SHIPWRIGHT Matchy Star is an engineer extraordinaire. Ready to use mathematics and a trusty graphing calculator to explore the cosmos, Matchy is happy, upbeat, and full of unbridled contagious enthusiasm. Matchys positive nature inspires other stars to achieve nerdy heights. SPACEY GALAXY AS DAUNTLESS ELEGANT DIPLOMAT Spacey Galaxy once managed to negotiate a truce in the Klatu Nebula by strategically sneezing at exactly the right moment. Never shying away from the personal touch, Spacey once took a galactic rulers space dog to the groomers all in the name of peace. SPEEDY SPUTNIK AS INTERSTELLAR SHIPMENT MANAGER Speedy Sputnik knows the routes though space to get anywhere fast. Speedy managed to change the speed of light for a few hours just to make sure a delivery got to its destination on time. Always out for a promotion, this Sputnik dreams of doing deliveries for Matchy Mart. DOCTOR UFO SPACE PHYSICIAN MD Doctor UFO attended space medical school at the prestigious Space University of Medicine and Shoe Cobbling. Dont let the good doctors derpy demeanor fool you, this UFO is capable of diagnosing a multitude of diseases by sense of smell alone! PIRATE PLANET AS A MIGHTY BOOTY HUNTER Pirate Planet is so grumpy that just scowling can intimidate enemies into surrendering their valuables without the need to say a word. Pirate Planet is a noble pirate, only stealing things the rapscallion really wants but doesnt have and cant afford. LOONY LANDER AS QUAINT ALIEN BOTANIST Loony Lander realized an internal talent for botany by managing to plant a spare microchip which grew into a tree that had tiny little computers on it. The computers were too small to use but they taste great! GURU MOON AS ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST SPECIALIST Always one for supernatural coincidences and fortune telling shenanigans, Guru Moon became a Guru by successfully predicting how long the halftime show at the Space Bowl would be every year 5 years in a row down to the second. Matchy Star Match-Them-All : We announced Matchy Star in early 2018 and people have started reaching out to us about the game already. We have no official launch date just yet because we want to finish up the game first, so we decided to share game game development notes to talk more openly about Matchy Star game design as it comes along. When we decided to create Matchy Star, we were hoping to build a casual yet charming match 3 experience with a little bit of personality. It has been a continuous process of design, in which we are still trying to find that just right balance of elements. At first, we experimented with having the game strategically place new gems based on how the board is laid out, we wanted to make it much more fun though. After letting some time pass, found more games like Lemmings and Chu Chu rocket to get inspiration from, and finally a lot new ideas were implemented in Matchy Star making it an interesting Match-Them-All. In Matchy Star, it is possible to move pieces around unlike other match 3s because it is not about matching a set number of matches to get through the level. Instead it is about doing the massive matches on the ship's path, and keeping up the ship's fuel which is what determines if you make it through the level. It is not a linear swap and match. Instead, it is a puzzle to optimize the best way to match given the grid opportunities per level and the paths that the ships will travel on. These design choices make Matchy Star a challenge that demands skills, rather than luck. Matchy Star is not a single-dimensional Match 3, it has the core mechanics of a Match 3 and at the same time it has multiple elements from different genres. There are advancements that come with content, from the typical bonuses and itemization, all the way to clicker mechanics to interact with the game differently. We continue to work on the different layers fleshing out ideas till the game feels as fun as it gets.. Matchy Star World : We previously talked about Matchy Star being a Match-Them-All twist on a Match 3 design, this time around we explore on the components that integrates the main content: the mechanic how it works, along with its elements dynamic. Most Match 3 often define gameplay by arranging different grids, including challenges as you progress through levels. This design idea encourages collecting identical matches throughout a board, making it somewhat random and repetitive. Players often admit this is what makes the experience without any incentive, considering its a random chance of luck to pair up matches which most developer tend to facilitate by limiting tiles or elements on the tile. In Matchy Star there are multiple elements to consider into the Match-Them-All mechanic. First we have a square grid of 9 x 9, a total of seven stars the base of the match 3 design; now incorporating new elements into the mix, we have the ships and the paths which can go through different challenges as we move forward through the levels. Mixing all of these elements together, we have a dynamic grid that will change in different shapes including different ship pathways to provide as many possible matches to be done with any of the seven stars spread out throughout the grid. Click here to watch the video example of this There is itemization to consider too, there will be items that drop on the board and items to be found at the shop. Items on the boards are considered somewhat of a loot drop, ideally mostly cosmetic items. There will also be items you can buy, which will provide for random stats that can help you advance through areas much easier. So far we have included items that will feature speed, this will make the ship go at a different speed to help you make more matches without running out of fuel. There are also specific ones that will only trigger time assistance when youre almost out of fuel, giving you a saving grace to recoup and find last minute matches to continue. More features include color bonuses, it gives a particular boost to the matches of the gems selected providing for more money at the end. And also, fuel efficiency boosts making you spend less fuel as you make more moves. Some of these items will become important at some areas where the challenges in time and pathways become difficult enough for you to require a bit of help to get through them. Time is a variable that comes along with fuel and and speed efficiency of the ships, which is why it takes the player to strategize and consider itemization part of their planning while doing matches. Matchy Star has 11 Star Systems and each system has its own set of items and its own set of item powers it assigns randomly to the item. The items drop in bubbles and when you match them they go over to your item storage section on the right of the screen. Once you have 3 items, any additional items bump your oldest one meaning in each level you can only collect 3 items tops. Also one item is just a bundle of cash that can be used to buy upgrades at the shop. Along this match 3 gameplay mechanics, there is more to discover from Matchy Star. By clearing levels you also get to discover more of the Matchyverse, and ultimately unlock characters that you can play with by the end of it (and that change the game dynamic). There is a garage shop in which you get to interact with the ships as if they were your pets, MatchyGotchy style a lot of different layers that come together for the Matchy Star experience.
