Kujukuri Beach is one of Japan’s representative sandy beaches. Seine fishing has traditionally thrived here.
Firefly Squid

During the springtime, the luminous firefly squid (watasenia scintillans) fill Toyama Bay. The squid emit their ethereal blue glow on the ends of their feelers to scare off predators. The resulting luminescence is a mesmerizing sight, which has drawn hordes of tourists to the area.

The dazzling phenomenon is only visible for a short period of time, from March to early June. The town of Namerikawa runs a tourist service that sends out fishing boats equipped with cameras to take visitors out into the bay in the darkness to witness the event.

Tourists on board trail the fishing vessels as they sail about 1.5 kilometers offshore, observing the squid at close range. When the fishermen dump their nets, the squirming hotaruika burst forth with a stunning blue and white glow, stirring the tourists into awe.

The squid are then brought back to the port, where they are auctioned off and boiled for shipment. Located just five minutes from the port, Kappo-araki is a cozy restaurant where you can enjoy a plate of fresh and delectable firefly squid kama-age hotpot. The squid is boiled in broth of sake and kombu seaweed until tender, then served on a platter with vinegared miso paste. The dish is simple, but the result is exquisite. This is a must-visit experience for any seafood lover. Reservations are essential, especially in the high season.
