Can finally try to play. THANK YOU FOR FIXING. My logitch light up mouse lol plays it fine. Now to finally play it again after 200 years.. Maniac Mansion is unlike almost any other adventure game (except for Zak McKracken). The reason is that the NPCs in the game are alive. They have their own goals (get food, get mail, check out suspicious events), they can catch you, you can die or lose important items. Actions have real consequences, and there's even choice and different endings. The trailer above is very adequate and demonstrates some of that.

The reason this game is so alive is the scripter David Fox, the same designer who did Zak McKracken and was heavily involved in the recently released Thimbleweed Park. Even though he's not the official game designer, he's the one who loves to make NPCs have their own virtual theater with daily routines, reactions to your actions, etc.

This is also the first game that introduced mouse based interface and cut-scenes (in 1988). Sadly, the later games of Ron Gilbert and LucasFilm Games ended up being way more static, lifeless and fake, with NPCs that don't move, and player actions that never punish you, but at least kept the exploration and meaningful puzzles we can find here.

The modern port of Maniac Mansion is very good. It supports mouse, multiple saves, and different graphical versions of the game. Of course, it's the fan made ScummVM, but it's great nevertheless.. Here we finally have a seperate release of the Maniac Mansion game avalible for Steam for the first time. I've previously did a mini review of this game for Day of the Tentacle as it was playable in its entirety in that game alone. So for this review I will discuss the game in great detail since I'm not talking about the sequel this time around. Maniac Mansion was a LucasArts game from the year 1987 that revolves on the plot of a mad scientist named Dr. Fred Edison who wasn't quite himself after he came into contact with a mysterious meteor from space that has mind controlling powers that took away Dr. Edison's free will. 20 years later, Dr. Edison abducted a college girl named Sandy as a test subject for his diabolical plans that are being made upon orders from the meteor. Dave Miller, Sandy's boyfriend locates his captured girlfriend at the Edison Mansion that is located somewhere in the countryside. Rather than calling the police to apprehand the mad doctor, Dave chooses the Scooby Doo route by recruiting two of his friends to rescue Sandy. The mansion is not out of the ordinary as there are traps, hidden rooms, and the presence of two disembodied tentacles that the Edison family keep as pets. With the help of two friends, Dave is likely to rescue his girlfriend or die trying.

Maniac Mansion was an innovating adventure of its time as it was the first LucasArts game to utilize the SCUMM(Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) game engine. Commands like 'look', 'give', 'use' etc. were among the fuctions of the game giving players various options during the gameplay. Future LucasArts adventure games would use this concept until other game engines came along to replace it. The game has six different characters to select with Dave as the default choice with the additional two friends of his being one of the six choices. Each character has his or her own special skills and effects the out come of the game. Among the choices is Bernard who is the only recuring character for the Day of the Tentacle. So I always include him in the party, but you are welcome to choose whoever in order to see the different endings. The game was directed by Ron Gilbert who would later direct the first two Monkey Island games as well as the first Putt-Putt & Spy Fox games from Humongous Entertainment. A then unknown Tim Schafer was among the programmers for this game, he would later write for Secret of Monkey Island & co-directed Day of the Tentacle which got his computer adventure game career rolling.

The overall plot of the game is a parody to various monster B rated movies, the Edisons are on par with the Addams Family and the Edison Mansion was model after the Skywalker Ranch house. Comparing this game to todays games shows how far adventure games have went. This game is dated but should be taken for what it is as it did provided inspiration for future adventure games and jump started some of the original programmers careers. It spawn an even better sequel Day of the Tentacle, which I already said what I needed to say about that game. Read my review on that for more details. Maniac Mansion holds an importance to the history of games, an importance that shouldn't be ignored as given reasons aboved..

There's a fan-made version of this game called "Maniac Mansion Deluxe". It's far better than either version in this release, and it's free. The NES version however is still the best of all current Maniac Mansion versions available. It just isn't the same without Dave's theme.

This release holds no value beyond archiving, which isn't going to be a reason for most people to buy (who will want an actual good gaming experience), which is why I can't recommend this release.

In fullscreen, the mouse tracking is wildly inaccurate, and jumps all over the place. *IF* you get this, hit alt+enter to put it in a very small (640x480) windowed mode, where mouse tracking is actually accurate. F5 brings up the in-game menu.

Being stuck to the very small 640x480 window to play the game properly is a huge negative, though when I disable fullscreen stretch through my GPU so it's only vertstretch in fullscreen instead of widescreen stretch as well (something this game was not intended to display at), the image is quite blurry. This game needed a remaster or a remake, not a re-release.

This is the worst audio presentation of the MM releases - the NES version had the best audio. This actually has virtually *no* audio, and the audio it does have is highly annoying (even in the "Enhanced" version, which I'm pretty sure is the Amiga release). This game needed a remaster or a remake, not a re-release.

Needs contextual interactions, annoying these days to have to click every specific action first before interacting with something, every single time. Or at least keybinds for interactions to speed things up. This game needed a remaster or a remake, not a re-release.

Has multiple "dead ends", which was common in old-school adventure games. A "dead end" is when you use an item in the wrong way as it's meant to solve a later puzzle, but rather than give you a contextual error message and leave the item, it consumes that item and when you encounter the puzzle that correctly required that same item, you don't have it and that game no longer has it to be found anywhere, so you need to start over. All interactable items blend is so well with the rest of the art that you don't know what's what unless you click on absolutely everything. Two of the characters have "unwinnable" games. Save yourself a headache, use a walkthrough. This game needed a remaster or a remake, not a re-release.

This version doesn't have the censorship the NES version does (this becomes apparent very quickly), but regardless, this game needed a *lot* of work to really hold up to the legacy of its memory. It doesn't need a re-release, not even of the NES version. This game needed a remaster or a remake, not a re-release.. 1st ever game I refunded

Missing music
Worse Graphics
Mouse jumps all over screen
Would've been better if they just ported the NES version. This is a scummVM game at least on my mac, so in order to save or quit, you need to hit fn-f5 to save or quit. I bought this game because it is precompiled, but this can be found for free for those savy techies.

I'm glad these old games are being re-released none the less
