Define Your Target Audience

Along with coming up with a unique solution, you need to have an idea of whom you're actually selling to. Again, be very specific. If you try to please everyone, you'll end up pleasing no one. Figure out the exact demographic who will most benefit from your product or service. Stick to them. Of course, they first have to be present in viable numbers wherever you're setting up business. Otherwise, adjust your target audience and your unique solution accordingly, or find a better location.

BONUS: Always Keep Your Promises

In figuring out your USP, make sure you can actually deliver. There are few things worse for business than building expectations among potential customers only to let them down.
The kingdom of owning a successful business with the help of proper marketing and advertising can be likened to the Business Owner who tried planting a line of oak trees in front of his office building to give it the perception of being sturdy after standing the test of time. After planting the saplings, the Owner dutifully spent time watering and overall nurturing his little oaks. After a couple months of this, the Owner became frustrated that his tree-lined parkway didn't have the majestic shade he imagined. In disgust, he hired a landscaping company to destroy the trees and simply seed the area with grass which never gave the perception and shade to his business that he longed for. It's the Business Owner who's in tune with how nature works that will get better results from his marketing efforts. He knows he can't plant an oak or maple sapling one spring day and have an orchard by mid-summer. It takes patience to wait for nature to run its course, as does a marketing campaign to take root among your target market and grow. Those who plant short-term, such as annual flowers, will get what they want very quickly but it won't stay year after year, getting bigger and stronger with time. The same is true for the short-term "sale" or the "try it for a couple of months to see what happens" approach.
