A string of systematic bank robberies by a daring gang of thieves who name themselves The Ex-Presidents, terrorize sun-drenched southern California, as the rubber-masked criminals act fast without leaving a trace, right under the noses of the police. Under those circumstances, the clean-cut and inexperienced F.B.I. Agent, Johnny Utah, after following up on a lead, goes undercover to infiltrate the local surfing community to extract information from his surf tutor, Tyler. Before long, as Johnny gets into the group, he will befriend Bodhi, the mystic and enigmatic surf leader, who will teach him not only how to catch the perfect wave, but also how to find a new meaning in life. Inevitably, Johnny walks a thin line. How far will he go without blowing his cover?
In Los Angeles, California, a gang of bank robbers call themselves The Ex-Presidents. commit their crimes while wearing masks of ex-Presidents Reagan, Carter, Nixon, and Johnson. The F.B.I. believes that the members of the gang could be surfers, and send young Agent Johnny Utah undercover at the beach to mix with the surfers and gather information. Utah meets surfer Bodhi, and gets drawn into the lifestyle of his new friend.
Pappas's line "This Calvin and Hobbes is funny" is hilarious and is one of many impressive lines in an impressive movie. Good to see an iconic comic strip get a mention in a top movie like Point Break. Point Break is what it is, good ol' fashioned action and entertainment, and gripping to the end.

Talking about the end, even though the final scene was set in Bell's Beach in Australia, it was actually filmed in Oregon. There was only one Australian actor with a speaking part in the scene, Peter Phelps who had the line "death on a stick" in reference to the treacherous surfing conditions. Still, the location looked authentic, although the police officers "Aussie" accents could have been a bit better (the actors aren't Australian). You would think that with so many Aussie actors in the USA (keen to get a spot in a pilot), the casting director could find them to fill these roles. Why this movie was not on the AFI's top 100 of all time, I'll never know. This is easily Busey's best action film since 48 Hours with Richard Pryor. I highly recommend the DVD. Just wish it had audio commentary with Keanu Reeves and Gary Busey. Hopefully a Collector's Edition is on its way.
A hare-brained wild ride through big surf and bad vibes, Point Break acts like a huge, nasty wave, picking up viewers for a few major thrills but ultimately grinding them into the sand via overkill and absurdity.
Tapping the Source (1984), a novel by Kem Nunn, provided the inspiration for Point Break. It's called "Hundreds of Tears" by Sheryl Crow. Yes. There's likely no way a surfer as experienced as Bodhi could survive it. Bodhi even says earlier in the film when he describes the storm at Bell's Beach and how big the waves will be that surfing the break will be the "ultimate price". Bodhi had basically wished to die in a glorious manner and he did.
