The landscape is the basis for every assignment: soil type, relief, climate, wind direction, history and the situation in terms of (ground) water. An analysis of the place is always the starting point.

Insights from landscape Design or gardening are very valuable for creating landsc...

LANDSCAPE IS IN MOTION

Landscape is an integral system of intertwined processes. It should therefore not be approached as a static whole, but as a system. We humans are also part of this system. We would like to meet our wishes and needs. We want to recreate and produce food, but also to live safely. That is why we are building the landscape and tinkering with the system. As a landscape architect, it is essential to understand this system.

Landscape analysis of the island of IJsselmonde (Rotterdam south). A vision and concept have been developed based on old dike structures, the water system, the existing infrastructure and differences in height in the landscape.

RESTORATION OF NATURE AND LANDSCAPE

In the last century, many landscape and ecological values have been lost due to urbanisation, infrastructure, scaling up and intensification of agriculture. Many connections for the city and people have been added, but often at the expense of connections for water, flora and fauna. In new landscape designs we try to restore as many values as possible. Recovering connections from an understanding of ecology and water. In this way we not only create a beautiful landscape, but also a working landscape.

GARDEN DESIGN

For me, garden architecture and landscape architecture are strongly linked. I see the garden as a reflection of the landscape and an answer to the landscape. The hidden qualities of the landscape are reflected in the garden. Unfortunately, a garden is increasingly becoming a private paradise that denies its surroundings.

GARDEN AS A CONNECTION WITH THE LANDSCAPE

A garden is a piece of nature, a piece of landscape, to feel at home. Surrounded by greenery, you can relax in a world that is becoming increasingly crowded, hectic and stony. We are often on the road, often working in different places far from home and moving more and more often. A strong bond with a specific place (as we knew it up to half a century ago!) is therefore becoming less and less. However, as a result of this lifestyle, the need for a connection to a place is greater than ever! A (green) garden can greatly contribute to a bit of bonding with the country on which you live.
