Billy Tyne is a sword-fishing-boat captain out of Gloucester, highly competitive and stung by a string of poor outings. His crew is hardly back in port when he tells them he's going out again, even though it's October and the weather can turn ugly. Five join him: the young Bobby, newly in love; Murph, a devoted father recently divorced; Sully, a guy Murph despises; Bugsy, who's finally met a woman who likes him; and Alfred, a quiet Jamaican. They catch little, so they sail east, with Tyne ignoring storm warnings behind him. Finally, the fish bite, but the ice machine fails. Should they head home through the storm of the century, or wait it out and lose their catch? Fearful, the women wait.
An unusually intense storm pattern catches some commercial fishermen unaware and puts them in mortal danger.
The Perfect Storm: 4/10

(***SPOILERS BELOW***)

I like "special FX" movies, generally for one time viewing, but this just bored me. The characters were dry, the script and dialogue were thin, and it was just a case of waiting for the trip out to sea and subsequent problems. Once the problems started, the movie got pretty interesting. The FX were great, some of the waves were scary, but the boat miraculously survived until the very end of the movie. The flick seemed to build to that HUGE wave that is on the DVD cover, which signals "good night" for everyone, and kills off the entire crew mercilessly. It's not a very good movie though, I'd be reluctant to even recommend it for one time viewing. Since 'Independence Day' I've been asking myself pretty often, why the most patriotic American movies are directed by Germans. 'ID4' was the most patriotic film I still remember, 'In the Line of Fire' and 'Air Force One' were also good examples. Now comes Petersen with his 'Storm' and creates another type of patriotism. And Emmerich? Well, he comes with 'The Patriot'. Isn't this strange. I now, Americans don't criticize patriotism in movies (I experienced that very often) but as a German it's so obvious and disturbing, that it ruined all of the films above. I will never understand the love for a country. But beside that I had a lot of other things in mind while I watched 'The Perfect Storm'.

Let's say something about the actors first. Let's say, well, they did everything they could. With a screenplay, that surely didn't exist, they have to fight with dialogue which is so stupid, it's hard to suppress a laugh. But they do their job well. Clooney is always fine to watch and the rest of the cast is really okay. Diane Lane even surprised me with her acting.

But that leads me directly to the dialogue and the screenplay. It's based on Sebastian Jungers book and if you know it you know how much they could take for the screenplay. But not that less. When Clooney describes his life as a fisherman to Mastrantonio it's impossible not to laugh. To use that dialogue as the last lines of the film is a big mistake. And to show the little boy who waves at the boat is the biggest. Other example?

Michael Ironside plays the obligatory bad boss who only thinks about money. When the Andrea Gail is in the storm everybody sits in the Crow's Nest and watches TV to hear any news. Ironside comes in and tells them, very concerned, that there is not much hope. He seems very emotional then. Lane, who is angry, screams at him: 'Do you think we should be proud of you, because you dared to come in here?' Ironside, with an serious, close to crying, expression says: 'Yes.' I couldn't believe it.

But the worst thing of all is the conflict between Murph (John C. Reilly) and Sully (William Fichtner). They argue when they meet first in the bar. They argue on the boat. And again and again and again. The point is that nobody in no single word explains why. They just argue and fight because in the screenplay was written: 'Sully and Murph don't like each other and argue all the time.' Sully has an interesting job, by the way. Clooney hires him, because he needs him, but on the boat he doesn't do anything else but giving the other fishermen lights. And he doesn't do his job very well.

I could go on and on, but it's to annoying. I think I made it clear that the dialogue is the last reason to watch this film. But it still is worth watching and the only reason for this is the storm itself. What ILM and its effects guys did here is unbelievable. These are of course the best special effects this year and for a long time. The storm sequences are so suspenseful and exciting and amazing that you forget every sentence that was spoken. The best thing they could have done was to also generate the characters in the computer. This hour of storm makes the money really worth spending. Really.

But at the end I have to say something else which annoyed me pretty much. To say that they glorified the swordfishing is an understatement. At several times it is said that swordfishing is the best thing in the world. We see them catch one fish after another and it's filmed with such a joy, you want to jump on the boat and cut a fish's head of. What was absolutely forgotten by all this was how much the fishing industry killed life in the sea. It's no wonder the boats catch so less fish. There just isn't pretty much they have left. At one point they catch a shark and no one says what a waste of life it is to just kill him, because he's a 'evil' shark. Bang! and they throw him overboard. Finally got rid of another evil creature. If the fishing industry goes on like this there will not be any fish in the sea. Since 1600 there were millions of fish killed in the seas and a lot of species were killed to extinction. The film should be dedicated to these forgotten species and the enormous amount of life which was killed instead of the few 10.000 fishermen who achieved this. To show killed fishermen as if they died for something honorable shows again the egoism and arrogance of our culture. Unabashedly designed to blow its audience away.
Just back in Gloucester (Massachusetts) with a not-so-great catch, Billy Tyne (George Clooney), captain of the swordfishing boat Andrea Gail, decides to take the boat out once more before the season ends in October. Along with his five man crew—Bobby Shatford (Mark Wahlberg), David "Sully" Sullivan (William Fichtner), Dale "Murph" Murphy (John C. Reilly), Mike "Bugsy" Moran (John Hawkes), and Alfred Pierre (Allen Payne)—Billy decides this time go out further than the Grand Banks, all the way to the Flemish Cap, not knowing that there is a perfect storm brewing around them. The movie is based on The Perfect Storm(1997), a creative nonfiction book by American author Sebastian Junger. It was adapted for the film by screenwriter William Wittliff. Linda Greenlaw has also written a book, The Hungry Ocean (2000), that details a typical month in her career as the world's only female swordfish boat captain. The "Perfect Storm" was the name given to a real 1991 nor'easter that evolved into a hurricane off the Atlantic coast of Canada. As the movie explains it, the perfect storm was due to four weather patterns coming together: (1) Hurricane Grace moving north off the Atlantic seaboard, (2) a low south of Sable Island, (3) a cold front swooping down from Canada, and (4) the warm Gulf Stream. When these four elements met, the cold front spawned an extratropical cyclone east of Nova Scotia that intermingled with the remnants of Hurricane Grace and ultimately evolved into a hurricane itself. Yes, although the movie dramatizes four different stories about people who were caught in the storm. The main story is based on the Andrea Gail, a 72-foot commercial-fishing vessel (home port Marblehead, Massachusetts) that sailed from Gloucester, Massachusetts, on 20 September 1991, bound for the Grand Banks, with Captain Billy Tyne at the helm. Because the fishing was poor, she then headed for the Flemish Cap. After her ice machine malfunctioned 36 days later, the Andrea Gail headed for home on 26 October. On the way home, she got caught in the "Perfect Storm." However, much of the movie's drama, e.g., catching the shark, one of the crew getting pulled overboard by an errant hook, etc. was either based on prior trips, interviews with past crew members, or stories about other fishing vessels. The actual guess work was the sinking itself, since the Andrea Gail had no communications during that period. The other three stories concern (1) Linda Greenlaw (played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), the captain of the Hannah Boden, sister ship to the Andrea Gail, (2) the plight of the Mistral, a yacht caught in the storm waters, and (3) the attempts of the Coast Guard and Air National Guard to rescue the sailors on both the Andrea Gail and the Mistral. If you view the "HBO First Look" in the Special Features on the DVD, you'll see the real-life Linda Greenlaw meet Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Gloucester, Massachusetts is a port city located on Cape Ann, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) up the coast from Boston. The town took its name from the city of Gloucester in southwest England. Gloucester can be seen on the following map of Massachusetts. The Grand Banks and the Flemish Cap are located in
