Dr. Amusa approaches Dortmunder about a valuable gem in a museum that is of great signifigance to his people in Africa, stolen during colonial times. Dortmunder assembles a crack team of cat burglars and hatches an elaborate plan for stealing the gem. Despite their care and experience, circumstances and plain bad luck keep the gem just out of their reach.
A band of four thieves - bomb maker Greenberg, driver Murch, locksmith Kelp and the mastermind Dortmunder (who happens to be Kelp's brother-in-law) - are hired by Dr. Amusa, an African ambassador, to steal the museum-housed diamond called the Sahara Stone, a gem of cultural importance to Dr. Amusa's country. This heist is not going to be the only one that Dortmunder has to plan to retrieve the diamond, as, one time after another, the foursome manage to have the gem, but not quite in their own possession. Working with, or perhaps against the foursome in retrieving the gem is Greenberg's father (shyster lawyer). Despite the problems in getting the diamond, Dortmunder is determined to break what he calls the curse of the diamond.
This easy-flying, easy-going diamond "in the rough" starring hacks likc Redord, George Segal, Zero Mostel, Ron Liebman.,,,,etc. is like trying to explain the Good Movies of the 70's that weren't GREAT. Buy a yo-yo and some chewing gum. Smooth, ironic, surprising relationships, All good actors and script, ..a heist film..NOT!

I don't think it made a dime (I'm sure it didn't), although Redford was at his peak and Segal was starting to fade (both these actors were and arae great guys and great actors..I've met them) after The Producers for Z. Mostel and nobody remembers who Paul Sand was. Liebman (as the car man) WAY deserved a supporting actor nomination (his character and performance really stand out in this lovely film that's about getting over; like so many modern films pretend to be), but no one was recognized for a wit script without being violent or sexy (although either Topo Swope or Mia Farrow's babe sister is married to Segal), it wasn't presented in a feasible shlocky format (although they were stealing stuff that insurance covered). Just try to find it and you will be pleasantly surprised about America and easy bomb films of a golden age of people movies! Go for It! I really like this Movie! The Hot Rock might not be the pinnacle of cinematic greatness, but it's a well made and funny little crime caper, and I'm sure anyone with a mind to see it will enjoy it! The film is clearly not meant to be deep or thought provoking in any sense and was obviously made just for entertainment, and in that respect it succeeds admirably. The film is best described as a heist movie and only really has one original idea; that being the fact that the thing the criminals are stealing in this movie evades them constantly, leading to the planning of several heists. There's not really an idea other than that in the film, but it's stretched out nicely across a few well worked heists. Our main character is a man named Dortmunder. He's fresh out of jail and already being approached by an old contact wanting him to help pull another job. The job in question involves a team put together by Dortmunder stealing a huge diamond from a museum. After putting a plan together and pulling it off, they end losing the diamond and have to steal it again...and again and again.

As you would expect considering the plot, the film doesn't take itself completely seriously and the plot is played out by a number of entertaining characters and in good humour. The film is not as stylish as some other crime films and the focus is put more on the execution of the numerous heists rather than the style of the film. The heists themselves get sillier as the film goes along; eventually building into a highly unlikely way of stealing a diamond. The film benefits from a strong cast, headed by the charismatic Robert Redford, who manages to lead the film effectively despite running on autopilot for most of it. Redford gets good support from the likes of George Segal and Paul Sand, but it's Zero Mostel who really steals the show as the unlikely villain of the piece. The plot moves along at a steady pace and the film fits it's one hundred minute running time very well in that it doesn't ever become boring, Even though certain parts of the film are hard to take seriously, it's easy to just sit back and enjoy it; and overall, if you're looking for an entertaining way to spend some time; you could do a lot worse than this.
