San Diego based David Stratton is seeking his party's nomination as state senator. His political life has taken a toll on his marriage, his wife Ginny who has left him - somewhat temporarily - with their infant daughter Kathy. They still love each other but she isn't sure she can handle being the wife of a senator, which in and of itself may be in jeopardy if she isn't at his side at pre-election functions. David awakens one morning to find a young woman asleep in Kathy's room, the woman who apparently had been there at least all night. She is seventeen year old runaway Jody Dvorak - also calling herself Jody Drew - who broke into the house since there was evidence the homeowners were away on vacation. As David learns she has an abusive home life, he wants to help her with her immediate goal of getting to Los Angeles to stay with a sympathetic aunt. He purchases her new clothes and believes he has placed her on a bus with some extra pocket money. But as he returns home later that evening, he finds that Jody has returned and has no intention of leaving... yet. By that time, David has learned from television news that she really is an escapee of juvenile detention, which she achieved by critically stabbing one of the facility's matrons. David can't telephone the police as Jody threatens to figuratively yell rape, which would ruin his political career. As Jody calls in three criminal friends - the violent Buck, the menacingly controlled Ron, and the subservient Midge - for support, David, while being held captive by them in his own home, further learns that their plan is ultimately for him to assist them in crossing the border into Mexico to escape capture. David has to figure out how to get rid of the four fugitives, while saving his political career and his marriage.
A rising political star faces scandal and blackmail when the young woman he tries to help turns out to be a juvenile delinquent.
Ann Margaret and John Forsythe star in this turgid little sleazefest about an incredibly naive and trusting candidate for the Senate who becomes embroiled with hot little teenage psychopath, Ann. Ann is at the height of her sex appeal here and a little more flesh in some of the ensuing scenes wouldn't have hurt this flick's watchability. In the end it all gets to be a little too much to take. Forsythe's character is so unbelievably stupid that he gets irritating really quick. On top of that his acting in this flick seems to be mostly comprised of not reacting to the inanity that's unfolding all around him. This leaves Mz. Margaret free to just chew up the scenery with a way-over-the-top performance as the twisted title character. The end results are a lot like the first "Batman" movie which featured Michael Keaton's deadpan Bruce Wayne against Jack Nicholson's hammy-to-the-tenth-power rendition of The Joker. It really didn't work too well there either. You end up wishing somebody would resucitate Forsythe and slip Ann a sedative in a good strong martini. The plot goes from promising to just plain unbelievable in about 80 minutes and by that time it's piled coincidence upon coincidence so unconvincingly that you're glad to just see the whole thing end. A lurid little pot boiler with a contrived happy ending, watch it for giggles, like i did.
A "good samaritan" becomes the stooge of a runaway delinquent and finds himself increasingly enmeshed in her plans for escape, hopes for security and frenzied search for "party, party", oh yes, and I mustn't forget on the embittered thirst for revenge on .... MEN!!! (quite important that one). Anne Margaret is the baddest lil' kitten this side of Tura Satana, petulantly pouting, winsomely whimpering, (she's a mixed up kinda girl) and generally venomously vituperating (it's not a verb?It is now!) she winds herself around John Forsythe's dimple cheeked, sincere and "much to nice to be a senator" good guy, whose initial ideas for helping the tormenting teen take him on a journey out of his serene existence to.........well Tijuana actually! Its a rollicking, blowsy B movie, with 50's stylisation and thinking, but made in 1964. Psycho-burbling, angst ridden, beat talkin' teens, prowl around a stagey, noirish set (home, car, mustn't forget the UNDERWEAR shop and of course.....Tijuana!) Expenses were definitely spared in this case, but it ain't your cheapo schlock, (and there ain't nothing wrong with that) its just that the composition, photography and lighting give this film the edge. I'll not forget the arresting closeup of A-M, head wrapped in a towel, screeching straight to camera while a kiddies' show plays on the TV behind her head, beautifully cutting in with "and we'll say 'bye 'bye children for now", and a groovy side lit silhouette of A-M whacking Bucky with a bottle (mmmm, lovely!) Its groovy, fab and so-o-o "guy!" (you'll get that when you see it) and there aint no whip in it! but there's a hell of a lot of Anne Margaret and lots more besides. My vote for a Sunday night at the local : 9 out of ten, and that's with no popcorn, and an original print (meaning flickering burn holes all over John Forsythe's nose). See it!
