Realtek 8111B LAN driver?
Realtek 8111B LAN driver?
Post by proxops-pete » 2008/03/19 16:34:09.
So I installed CentOS 5.1 64-bit fine but I can't get the LAN driver to work. Any ideas on this other than going out to buy a separate LAN card?
Motherboard is GIGABYTE GA-G33M-S2L with RTL 8111B chip and manufacturer website doesn't show any Linux driver. :(

Ok. so I downloaded the latest driver (r8168-8.005.00) tar.bz2 file. Put it on USB stick and copied it over to CentOS 5.1. Logged in as 'root' and tried to follow the directions on the readme file when untarred. It said to start with "make clean modules" but upon doing so, I get the following error message.
Entering an unknown directory [modules] Error 2 /lib/modules/2.6.18-53.el5xen/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
So I get the directory not existing. but what am I supposed to do then? just make the directory?
by the way, the build directory is a link to "../../../usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-53.el5-zen-x86_64" And there's nothing in "/usr/src/" diretory! O_o.

You need the kernel-devel package. This is normally kernel-devel, but in your case, because you are running the xen kernel, you need to get kernel-xen-devel and install it. Get the file:
Or if you have the CentOS DVD, copy the file from there. Once you transfer it to your CentOS box, do a:
rpm -ivh kernel-xen-2.6.18-53.el5.x86_64.rpm.

Again, thank you! Is "rpm" like "make"??

You will find what rpm is and how to use it.

Ah. so it's kind of equivalent/similar to Windows Installer. I have used *nix for over 15 years now. and only recently have I had to deal with the innards of the *nix OS. That is why I have decided to build a Linux PC. again, thanks for the help.

Once you get connected, you will be using yum to maintain all packages. You can find the documentation here:
