Ketosis can be caused by a low carb diet, such as the Atkins diet, and occurs when there are insufficient carbohydrates for the body to create energy so it starts breaking down fat cells instead. The by product of this process are called ketones and these are what give the breath its unpleasant odor when they get into your saliva. Ketosis can also be the result of medical problems such as diabetes.
The only way to completely eradicate ketosis induced bad breath is to cure the underlying problem first. This may entail seeking treatment from your doctor or reintroducing carbohydrates back into your diet. Of course, this may not be possible in all cases but there are ways you can limit the effect of the ketones on your breath and keep it smelling a little sweeter.

The Half Day Diet

One approach is to drink plenty of water. Halitosis can be either triggered or worsened by a frequently dry mouth as it is an ideal breeding ground for the bacteria, so it is important to stay hydrated. Some experts also claim that drinking a lot of water dilutes the intensity of the ketones, although this has not been proven.

Parsley can also lessen the unpleasant smell. Try adding it to your meals or chew some fresh parsley after meals. If you feel you cannot add enough fresh parsley into your diet there are also parsley supplements available. These are available in many health food shops and are also available online. Buying on the internet is often the cheapest option and gives you the opportunity to discreetly check out the range of bad breath remedies available, as there are a range of capsules, sprays and supplements designed to neutralise bad breath.
