So, basically, I carefully restricted what they wear. Now I know where everything is, and they know which clothes they can choose from every morning. Remember, 6 months ago they relied entirely on me to dress them. I find that imposing rules on them and myself has actually been a good thing. My older son will probably never be interested in clothes, but now at least he can go to school looking pretty good, and know what he's doing. He knows what the cuff and the placket are!
Clearly autism describes a wide range of symptoms and manifests itself in a variety of behavioural traits. However, I have found that my own OCPD is absolutely ideal for maximising this hobby of dressing well - the complex rituals of personal hygiene, meticulous pre-planning and conscientious presentation, scrupulous demeanour and perfect manners, the endless time dedicated to caring for clothes and shoes, and the strictures of co-ordinating complimentary materials, patterns and textures - a whole host of gloriously repetitive behaviours with clearly delineated rules and rigid schedules to dictate and provide the comfort of perfection during one's day.
