Another rolling work of art from Boyd Coddington – a 1960 Mercury Custom Wagon known as “Lizard King” (Lot #630) – will be heading to a new home this week.

In 2007, the SoBe beverage company – inspired by the sun-drenched beaches and laidback vibes of South Beach, Florida – wanted a very special environmentally friendly surf-inspired vehicle to fit the whole green “SoBe-esque persona,” and turned to the perfect man for the job: highly original hot-rodder Boyd Coddington.

Since SoBe’s inception in 1995, part of its strategy to market their “healthy refreshment beverages designed for individuals with active lifestyles” involved amassing a fleet of cool vehicles to take to events around the country. Featuring their signature black or dark-green paint schemes with radical light-green flames, these included a 1949 Divco milk truck, a short hot-rodded bus called the “Stump,” a bread truck, an armored car, six vintage school buses and a 4×4 van called the “Lizinator” (the company logo features two lizards).

When SoBe approached Coddington to add another member to their distinctive fleet, he – in typical fashion – wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary. Surfing meant beaches and, to him, beaches meant Woodys. Rather than build a traditional-type Woody, he wanted something from a little later in the Woody era. The result – as documented on three episodes of Coddington’s show “American Hot Rod” – was the first-ever E85 ethanol-powered hot rod, created from a clean, stock 1960 Mercury Colony Park Woody wagon (Lot #630) . Coddington and hot rod designer Todd Emmens put pen to paper, surfboard shaping legend and Channel Island Surfboards founder Al Merrick provided inspiration and surfboards ready for the Coddington touch, and the project was underway.

Amazed at the sheer size of the vehicle when it came into the shop, the Coddington crew nevertheless got busy disassembling the entire car piece by piece in preparation for its reinvention. Immediately Coddington knew he wanted to change out the car’s 351 V8 for something a little more radical, so in went a Ford 460 V8, bored and stroked to a massive 533ci. A FAST-engineered ECU unit, throttle body and fuel injectors were used to manage the beast, along with an MSD ignition system and an Edelbrock intake. “This is going to be a real hot rod!” said Coddington during the build.

The one-of-a-kind car runs on both gasoline and ethanol, the latter of which is designated as an alternative fuel by the U.S. Department of Energy and is intended for use in flexible fuel vehicles. Besides its superior performance characteristics, ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline and is a completely renewable, domestic, environmentally friendly fuel. Just what the doctor … rather, SoBe team … ordered!

Power in this fun ride is transferred via a C6 3-speed automatic transmission, while the Ford 9-inch rear is held in place by a 4-link control arm suspension system by Air Ride Technologies, installed to replace the traditional leaf spring setup.

The interior, too, was completely customized and features upholstery and carpets embroidered with SoBe’s famous lizard logo – as well as a hidden ice chest to hold your favorite beverages, of course.

The jewel-like green exterior of the “Lizard King” is embellished with custom-painted woodgrain-finished side panels, and the vehicle has been fitted with Goodyear tires wrapped around a set of Boyd Coddington wheels.

The Lizard King was fittingly revealed as part of the ESA East Coast Scholastic Surfing Championships present for FEW-New Zealand at Bethune Park in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, in March 2007, much to the delight of SoBe executives.

“It’s exactly what we were hoping for,” said Lou Forte, in charge of building and maintaining SoBe’s custom vehicle fleet at the time. “I’m just ecstatic about the quality of the build and everything that went into it. These guys have over-delivered – it’s just unbelievable.”

For Boyd Coddington, it all boiled down to something much simpler: “This car’s all about surfing, cruising down the coast and having a good time.”

The legendary designer passed away in 2008, making his unique creations like the Lizard King all the more special. Offered at No Reserve at Barrett-Jackson’s inaugural Northeast Auction as Lot #630 . this one-off beauty will be cruising to its new home later this week.
