In The World Of Vehicle Freight Shipping, What Is RORO, And Is It Right For You?

An introduction to roll on, roll off (RORO) shipping – and why you might choose it
It goes without saying that if you wish to arrange the transportation of a vehicle from one part of the world to another, you will wish to do everything possible to ensure a safe and efficient journey to its destination. Bearing this in mind, it makes sense to familiarise yourself with the various methods typically used for vehicle freight shipping.
One such method for transporting vehicles and other wheeled cargo, is roll on/roll off shipping, otherwise often referred to as “RORO”.
What is RORO shipping?
The term “roll on, roll off” almost describes itself – RORO shipping is a mode of shipping whereby vehicles can be driven onto and off specialised vessels. RORO vessels incorporate ramps or platforms that enable the easy movement of their wheeled cargo.
RORO shipping, then, is an alternative to using a container or airfreight for the delivery of a vehicle.
Why would you choose RORO shipping over alternative methods?
One major advantage of RORO shipping is that it does not necessitate the use of cranes or other loading equipment.
It also allows for the relatively easy loading and unloading of freight vessels, which could help make it the cheapest option when you need to ship a vehicle abroad (although this will not necessarily be true in all cases).
How are vehicles shipped using the RORO method?
The basic process is as follows: fully qualified vehicle handlers, known as “stevedores”, drive or tow the vehicles onto the vessel via a ramp. The vehicles, once on board the vessel, are each strapped to multiple lashing points – normally two at the back and one at the front of the vehicle.
The voyage then begins, with professional onboard cargo handlers regularly checking the straps and tightening them if needed. This helps to ensure the vehicles do not sustain any damage on their journey to the destination.
Upon arrival at the destination port, the ship is secured by the vessel’s crew, and preparation for unloading begins. The ramps or platforms are typically lowered onto the dock, so that the vehicles and any other wheeled cargo can be driven directly off the ship.
Port workers and equipment help to ensure the vehicles are manoeuvred safely onto the dock. On completion of the unloading process, the vehicles and cargo are typically inspected for damage, in addition to being sorted according to their destination and any other transportation requirements.
Would RORO be the right choice for the shipping of my vehicle?
There is, of course, no single answer to this question that applies to everyone. RORO operators can vary in the terms and conditions that they set – including when it comes to loading personal items inside the vehicle – or you might have your own reasons for favouring the use of airfreight or container transport.
