The headphone market has always been very competitive, but these days every person and their dog are trying to intervene in the game. To begin with, I don't really like it when brands use words like “buds” and “pods” to refer to headphones without headphones, but this is about branding and marketing. Interestingly, Huawei used the name “Studio,” which has long been rumored to be what Apple would call its headphones.

In plain black or gold with clean lines and the latest features, Huawei's FreeBuds Studio is eye-catching in terms of form and technology. They are targeting the same market and are in direct competition with other Bluetooth headphones such as Bose, Sennheiser and Sony, and obviously want to beat them as well. However, for this you need a smartphone from the same manufacturer.

Materials

Plastic, metal frame, eco-leather, three buttons. Huawei uses these materials to create the FreeBuds Studio, which at 260 grams looks pretty good, even if the fit was a little slippery for me and had to be adjusted quite often. The synthetic leather of the ear cushions and headband is neatly processed and elastic, but after a while the ears sweat a little. However, the wearing comfort was pleasant and light - thanks to some holes and channels to compensate for the pressure. Adjustable metal earbuds seem high quality and durable, they are very smooth, easy to move and have no chipping. Unlike more traditional designs, they do not end in a plug that the ear pads hook into, but retract into the middle of the ear pads. While it looks very good, it has its pitfalls when it comes to controlling the device on the ear with swipe gestures, because your fingers tend to touch the metal ends when swiping.

Sound

FreeBuds Studio sounds nicely balanced and open out of the box thanks to its dynamic 40mm drivers. The bass to treble tuning is quite successful and offers a powerful and very penetrating sound, making it easy to identify and localize even small details in a clear, fast manner across a wide stereo stage. This natural sound, which does not tire even for a long time, unfortunately loses its low-frequency basis when the noise cancellation is turned on; this results in distinct anti-aliasing, which doesn't sound so good to my taste.
