There was a time when unlocking a new smartphone was illegal,
even for consumers who wanted to use international SIM cards.
This changed in 2015 when the Unlocking Consumer Choice and
Wireless Competition Act was enacted. The act states that
cell phone carriers cannot deny a reasonable request to unlock
