If you're looking to install a new ceiling fan, there are a few things you'll need to do in addition to following the manufacturer's instructions. In most cases, additional wiring will be needed to attach the blades and wire nuts will be used to connect the wires. You'll also need to determine if your ceiling is sloped and whether or not you have the required tools to complete the job. Installing a ceiling fan is not a simple task, so if you're up for the challenge, read on to follow our steps. Alternatively, you can ask us at Electrability about how we can help you with your fan installation.
Steps to Install Ceiling Fan
Now, the steps we have listed below are suited for replacing an old light fixture with a new ceiling fan and light, with nothing on the above floor. So, keep this in mind if you're following along.
Remove the old light fixture
For this first step, you'll want to make sure the circuit is switched off. First, you must remove the shade and unscrew the nuts and screws that are holding the fixture to the ceiling. Slowly lower the fixture and disconnect the wires by twisting off the plastic connectors.
Remove the box and cut a new hole
Remove the old electrical box from the ceiling, then hold a pancake box against the ceiling, and trace around it with a pencil. A pancake box is a type of ceiling fan support base. Once you have traced it, cut along the line with a saw.
Attach the new electrical box
Once you have successfully cut out your traced line, feed the electrical cable coming from the ceiling through the hole in the pancake box. Next, put the box into the hole cut through the ceiling, press it underneath the joist. Attach the box to the joist by screwing it into place. Once you have fixed the box, wrap the wire around the screw inside the box, and let the wire hang down.
Place the ceiling medallion
Apply a small amount of adhesive to the back of the ceiling medallion, and feed the wires through the medallion. Now you can place the medallion on the pancake box and fasten it finishing Switchboard Upgrades nails into the joist. To be extra cautious, you can also put a dab of silicone caulk around the outside edge of the medallion to hold it in place.
Mount the ceiling plate
Now, position the fan's ceiling plate up to the pancake box and pull the wires through its hole. Attach the ceiling plate to the box with screws.
Assemble the fan components
Feed the wires coming from the motor through the centre and set it on top of the motor. Next, pass the wires through and thread them down the pipe into the top of the motor.
Make wire connections
Now it's time to make the wire connections. Depending on manufacturer instructions, this step can vary. Usually, the black wire should be attached to the black wire connector, the white wire to the white wire connector, and the ground wire to the green ground connector. Additional wiring may need the help of an electrician.
Install the blades
The next step is to attach the blades. There are usually four blades included with your fan. Two of the blades will have a hole in the centre, and the other two will not. The blades with the hole go on top and the ones without go on the bottom. To attach the blades, hold them up to the fan and make sure they are evenly spaced. Mark each blade where it meets the fan and screw it into place.
Install the shades and lightbulbs
Now you can install the shades and lightbulbs. For the shades, it's best to follow the manufacturer's instructions. As for the lightbulbs, screw them into the sockets on the fan, but be careful not to over tighten them.
