For over a year, schools have shifted online, with many disruptions, which was a difficult transition for both parents and children. Now, schools are re-opening again, and acclimatising children to go back to old ways is a surmounting challenge. Rushing your children to get back to old habits won’t bear positive results. Here are a few tips that can ease your child’s transition and help him/her settle back into school.

Rekindle School Memories

Schools have become virtual for over a year and kids have forgotten about the nurturing atmosphere of the school. You can generate enthusiasm for school in your kids by helping them revisit their happy memories of school. A good idea is to indirectly browse old school photos of extra-curricular activities, sporting events, classroom projects, and much more. Watching old videos and reintroducing schooling items such as bicycles, lunch boxes, backpacks that they haven’t used for a while, will excite them about returning to school.

Reintroduce the School Routine

Online classes and home-schooling lack the element of discipline required for attending a school. Erratic sleep and lack of routines mean that it will take some effort to revert to old ways. Rather than piling up all the rules at once, begin with small steps. You can change sleeping habits and encourage kids to wake up early in the morning. Also, slouching on the bed or couch is a bad habit that can be fixed by introducing some sitting sessions on a desk and chair setup. School hours require 3-6 hours of sitting and kids need to be prepared for that. of which are important for any school-goer.

Listen To Your Child

It isn’t as easy as it sounds. Children cannot abruptly change their lifestyles and can often be stressed and troubled by the change. Make sure to listen to and understand the problems your child is facing in adjusting to the routine and help them process their emotions. You can also speak with your child’s teacher (as long as your child is in agreement with this) about the problems your child is facing and access any additional support they may have in place. Have ongoing conversations about this to check in with your child to make sure they are getting their needs met.

Explain the New Norms

Post-lockdown schooling requires certain precautions for children. Using masks, minimising physical contact, frequent sanitisation is the new norms that can keep everyone safe. Children can have some initial difficulty adopting all these habits. It is advisable to model these habits yourself, as children learn from what we do, not just what we say.

It takes a great deal of patience to help children when you’re also juggling other siblings, a job and housework (and so much more!). Make sure that you make time for your own self-care. Remember that rushing or forcing children to do anything will only aggravate the problem.
