A break occurs when a referee breaks a clinch between two boxers. If a boxer hits his opponent after being knocked down, he has violated the Rules of Boxing. Another rule is to not hold. It involves the act of hugging and grabbing your opponent. The hometown rule is when a boxer receives the benefit of doubt from the judging officials based on the fact that he is a native of the town.

The rules for the match between two fighters were established by the Amateur Boxing Association of England. The first round consisted of three rounds lasting three minutes each with a one minute break in between rounds. The change was reversed between 1926 and 1997, and in 2000 the International Boxing Association changed the rules to four rounds of two minutes each. The new rules were formulated to give both boxers equal chances of winning. The decision of the referee may determine the outcome of the fight or it could stop the fight altogether.

A match is typically scheduled for six rounds with a break of one minute between rounds. In 2005, the rules were modified to allow for four rounds of two minutes each. The new rule stipulates that boxers rest at least one minute between rounds. The rules are identical to the old ones. The title isn't the end of a boxer's professional career. A match can last up to 12 minutes and three rounds can last longer than two minutes.
