Producer George Pal's and director Byron Haskin's landmark adaptation of the classic H.G. Wells novel that focuses on the invasion of the Earth by Martian war machines.
Scientist Clayton Forrester and Sylvia Van Buren are the first to arrive at the site of a meteorite crash. Soon after, an alien war machine emerges and begins killing at random. The Marines are called in, but they're no match for the aliens' force field. Forrester and Van Buren, however, are able to wound one of the creatures and procure a sample of its blood. They take it to Los Angeles where they hope, through testing, to be able to discover the aliens' weakness.
This was the best special effects Oscar winner for it's year, and there is no doubt that it was well deserved. Even though they didn't have Spielberg's budget and the improvements made over the years, the effects were superb and well worth watching.

They didn't have Tom Cruise wither, and had to make do with Gene Barry of "Burke's Law" fame, who did get a role in the remake. He and Ann Robinson, who also got a role in the remake, kept us interested as they fought the aliens. Of course, they really didn't do much fighting as Wells made it clear that it was design by god that defeated the Martians.

Of course the atomic science was laughable as they didn't have a clue.

But, outside of that, it was an exciting film and just as good as the remake. Humans battle creatures in strange crafts.

Often when Hollywood makes a re-make of a movie like this, the results are terrible (see the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still), but War Of The Worlds (2005) is just as good as WOTW (1953). Obviously, they come from totally different periods, so in some ways they are hard to compare, but they are both wonderfully entertaining epics with grand effects, great actors and thrilling music (by Leith Stevens and John Williams).

The re-make feels a bit more like a disaster movie than this one, and the 1953 one has a much better ending, they are the two changes that stand out to me. But both are great!
Corona, California, about 50 miles south-southeast of Los Angeles proper. Corona is in Riverside County near where Interstate 15 and route 91 now interesect. Neither highway was there at the time: just the old US 395. Corona was mainly ranches, farms, and woods at the time. It is now a relatively modern, bustling city near where two major Southern California highways and two large California counties (Orange and Riverside) meet.
