Here are the Top Things to Do in Monument Valley

Deep in the heart of Navajo land, Monument Valley is one of the most striking national parks in the country. As soon as you catch a glimpse of its natural beauty, you'll understand why people have flocked here from all over the United States to take in the sights. It's impossible to cover the entire park in one day, even taking a Monument Valley tour, but here are a few spots we think every visitor should find the time to see.

Fans of classic movies, especially westerns, will probably recognize Monument Valley from some of the many films that were shot there. Several of these shooting locations are found right on the main highway running through the park, so they're easy to find. Just south of the town of Mexican Hat is Forrest Gump Hill, where the film's titular character decided to end his long cross-country run. Monument Valley also briefly doubles as an alien planet in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. However, the area is most famous as the favorite filming location of legendary western director John Ford. Just off the highway, the now-renamed John Ford Point was heavily featured in several of Ford's most famous movies, including Stagecoach and The Searchers.

If you have the time, getting off the beaten trail will give you the opportunity to see some petroglyphs and other markers of the Ancestral Puebloans, also known as the Anasazi. These people were the ancestors of the modern indigenous Puebloans, and some of their relics are thought to be up to a thousand years old. If you have any interest in pre-colonial American history, it's well worth visiting some of these sites, especially if you take a tour with a Navajo guide.

To get a more in-depth look at the park, we recommend checking out our own Monument Valley Self-Guided Driving Tour, available now through the Action Tour Guide app.
