heir thumbs out to the good and the bad

Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week they discuss Knicks fans treatment of Andrea Bargnani, Cameron Wake, the Impact bowing out of the playoffs and expanded replay for MLB. Bruce Arthur, National Post: My thumb is up to New York Knicks fans and not just for living through the Isiah Thomas era. When you visit New York, its easy to feel like youve arrived from the boonies, gawking at the skycrapers and the locals are smarter than you. Well, when it comes to basketball, theres something to that. It took Knicks fans one quarter of basketball to decide that yes, Andrea Bargnani was a player who deserved booing, as his jumpers clanked and his defence floated and his rebounding remained largely theoretical. It was Bargnani at his worst, but still: one quarter and they knew. It took years before Toronto fully turned on the former first-overall pick, as he progressed from promise to disappointment to empty calories. Eventually, the relationship turned toxic. In New York, it might be already there. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is up to Cameron Wake, the former BC Lion, who added to a week or so of stunning finishes with a game-ending safety in the Thursday night football game between Cincinnati and Wakes Miami Dolphins. Weve seen walk-off home runs in baseball, just not walk-off safeties very often - not in the way Wake planted himself into quarterback Andy Dalton and drove him into the end zone. Its only the third time in NFL history that an overtime game has ended this way. The safety came after one World Series game ended with a pick-off and another ended on an obstruction call. Id love to tell you whats next, but honestly, I dont have a clue. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is down to the Montreal Impact, not as much for being outclassed in its MLS playoff game Thursday, but for losing without class. Of course, context is in order here. The second-year Impact actually made the playoffs, unlike, say, feckless Toronto FC. But true to its unfortunate habit, the Impact comported itself like sugared-up kids the morning after Halloween. Taking its cultural cue from (now former) coach Marco Schallibaum, who was suspended four times during the regular season, Montreal finished its playoff match in Houston with eight players. The final accounting: Three Dynamo goals and three Impact red cards. Houston, you are not the one with a problem. Dave Hodge, TSN: My thumb is up to Major League Baseball for going full speed ahead with expanded instant replay for next season. If Bud Selig needs a feather in his cap to mark his final season, that can be it. There is still potential for trouble if the finished product is too complicated, but it is time to give the umpires the help they so obviously need. Dont worry, boo-birds--there will still be room for managers to argue with them--on non-reviewable calls only--remember, not too complicated. But good for MLB if it gets it right--the NHL is advised to observe with interest and with a willingness to follow. Swingman Isaiah Canaan Jersey. The appointment of Boullier continues the behind-the-scenes restructuring at McLaren, who recently brought back former team principal Ron Dennis as its new chief executive. Nerlens Noel 76ers Jersey. Alen, 28, hit .315 with five home runs, 59 RBI and a career-high nine stolen bases for the Goldeyes last season. Allen Iverson Jersey. The above paragraph could be rewritten, verbatim, with Marcus Stromans name in place of Romeros. After both men had disastrous outings in Tuesdays 18-4 mauling at the hands of the Tigers, its clear that neither is the best option to begin the season in Toronto. Nik Stauskas Jersey. The question all fans want to know heading into this light heavyweight affair is will Rua display his true potential. Working with UFC welterweight fighter Demian Maias team in Sao Paulo Brazil and having training partners such as fellow UFC stand outs Fabio Maldonado and Daniel Sarafian, the 32-year old feels very well prepared for Friday nights encounter.St. Paul, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Under siege for much of the last two periods, Corey Crawford made 42 saves to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild. Minnesota outshot Chicago 37-10 after the first period, but Crawford was up to the task by stopping 35 of them to help the Blackhawks win for the second time in three games. Just trying to find the puck, said Crawford. They were getting some traffic in front. I was just trying to look around, battle as hard as I could. Chicago got a pair of goals from Bryan Bickell in the third period to pull away. Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane also scored for the Blackhawks. Jason Zucker and Jason Pominville scored the Minnesota goals, with Niklas Backstrom making 16 saves on 16 shots. It was probably the best game in a long time for us, said Backstrom. The result was not what we deserved. Minnesota was without forward Zach Parise due to the death of his father, J.P., on Wednesday. The elder Parise was a long-time NHL player himself and played nine seasons for the Minnesota North Stars. The Wild got off to a slow start in the first period and the Blackhawks took advantage. Already up 1-0 on a Sharp goal, Chicago got a great opportunity on the power play. Thomas Vanek was charged with a boarding major when he finished his shoulder- to-shoulder hit and drove Marcus Kruger into the boards right in front of Chicagos bench. On the power play, Jonathan Toews passed to Brad Richards sneaking into the slot from the blue line. With the defense converging in the crease, Richards found Kane open at the side of the net and he lifted the puck past a sprawling Backstrom for his 20th goal of the season.dddddddddddd Early in the second period, Zucker was left open for a shot in the slot. It was blocked by Marian Hossa, but six seconds later, Zucker took another pass from Pominville in the same spot and found the back of the net on his second try to make it a 2-1 game. Chicago used its timeout in the second period to try and slow down Minnesotas momentum, but the Wild would continue to buzz. The Blackhawks restored their two-goal lead 6 1/2 minutes into the final period. Kane dropped a pass back to Bickell in transition and he fired it over Backstroms shoulder. Minnesota would get within a goal again. Seconds into a 5-on-3, Pominville used a defender for a screen and ripped the puck past Crawford to make it a one-goal game and keep the Wild on the power play. Chicago would kill the remainder of the penalty and tally an empty-net goal. Richards cleared the puck out of the defensive zone and Bickell tracked it down before putting it into the vacated net to seal the win. Game Notes Kane has five points in two games against Minnesota this season ... Kane has scored 20-or-more goals in all eight of his NHL seasons ... The Wild were without goalie Darcy Kuemper and defenseman Marco Scandella with injuries ... The Blackhawks are now 14-0-0 when leading after two periods.
