For a game about exploration is sure loves taking away control quite a lot. It is also painfully slow in both exploring the world, dialogues, and pacing. Added to that there is the rather bad controls, which often gets in its own way. I don't know the number of times pressing Y had be instead of moving to a location, jump back to the ship and not letting me return.
The translation game also has it's flaws. Quite often I have to continue building a wrong sentence until it marks enough words as wrong so that it can continue with the final guessing.. An unusual beast – really clever, engaging, and interesting, with some really strange rough edges. It's an astonishing achievement in narrative construction, and in some ways that works to its detriment – the ways in which the environment, and your character's understanding of the environment, are affected by your actions is seamless enough that it can be hard to see what changed (until subsequent playthroughs).

Pros:
– The setting really is deeply engrossing, and the world-building is top-notch – quietly and un-self-congratulatorily makes 'diverse' choices, and starts to feel very real.
– The translation mechanic is really well-done and genuinely very fun.
– Much more replayable than it seems on a first playthrough – a lot of depth really unlocks, and none of the depth and variance in the narrative is at all disappointing.
– Some reviews have complained about the fixed (or semi-fixed) personality of the main character, but she's interesting and it feels very consistent and coherent.
– Nice devs! Very responsive to community feedback, a lot of broken things have been fixed.

Cons:
– I think a little bit of 'irrelevant' detail and discovery was lost for the sake of the narrative complexity. It's easy to feel that each individual location was too shallow – the overall universe of the game is so carefully-crafted, and I don't think this 'needed' to be an open-world game, but the world can feel very gated off, and individual portions of the experience very tightly-structured.
– The ending is oddly underwhelming. This feels deliberate on the part of the devs, and I get the narrative point being made, but the lack of a real moment of understanding is unsatisfying.
– Save system is annoying – it's too easy to misclick and ruin a playthrough.

I'd overall unreservedly recommend the game, though – the truly novel and innovative aspects feel very much worth tolerating the less brilliant side.. This is a very careful recommendation. The game is very unique and does many things right, but it comes with its share of issues, most stemming from its open-world trappings and design. At times it can be excellent and like nothing else on the market, but those moments are few and far between, drowned in rather tedious exploration and many small control and camera issues. When it works, it's great, but sadly it mostly doesn't work. That said, I am all for supporting developers who take these sorts of creative risks, and the positives outweigh the negatives, if slightly.. Absolutely excellent game for anyone with an interest in languages, real or constructed. If you enjoy cracking ciphers you'll probably get a kick out of this game too. Its in-game language system brings ancient Egypt to mind, with a nod to the Mayans.

The graphics work well and the game does actually let you explore areas quite a bit more than you think. (Tip: Ignore your companion the first time they ask you to return to the ship and poke around for longer, it's usually worth it.)

You are told very little to begin with and have to try to unravel what has gone on and what is going on. Multiple story threads from the past and the present pop up. The more of the language you uncover, the more you want to know.

There is an extensive fan-base for the game over at the Devs' Discord channel with spoiler and spoiler-free areas depending on what you want to discuss.

I bought this and played 9 hours on the day I got it. I only stopped because my eyes started to complain about needing to close for a while. I filled 4 pages of notes on the language, but the game keeps track of it very well and it's easy to review what you know/don't know so far.

You don't need to be a language nut either as the game makes suggestions for each word in a group and you choose which to try. If you're wrong, you usually realise it later and sometimes a character will tell you that you have a particular word wrong, or right!

If you like a good puzzle, with archaeological exploration thrown in - grab Heaven's Vault. You won't regret it.. Playtime: About 10 to 15 hours

Heaven's Vault is one of the most captivating games I've ever played.

Tremendous world building, great characters, and an engrossing narrative and overarching mystery.

This is easily one of my favorite games of 2019. I just finished it and i'm already excited to play it again. If you're a fan of Inkle, adventure games, or unique sci-fi settings do not let this game pass you by!. It's very good.

Decoding the ancient language is a delight. The characters are well written and engaging, and I get the impression that there's more variety in them than I saw in a single playthrough.

It's also a very odd game.

It's not exactly that the game breaks "the rules". It's more like the game doesn't recognise that there ARE rules. In a way, it feels like it belongs to an earlier age, when new genres were being forged. I don't think this is the product of accident or naivete. It reminds me of experimental games like Trinity (1986) and Blue Ice (1996), though it's a great deal more accessible than either.

It's not completely perfect.

I started playing before the first patch came out, and there were plenty of quirks and janks and gremlins along the way. I gladly forgave most of them, though. The design may be bold, occasionally disconcerting and elliptical... but the heart of the game is just good, straightforward storytelling. And it does that really well.

Heaven’s Vault also has an astonishing level of self awareness given its subject material. As an academic study, archaeology is rife with colonialist narratives, and the game manages to subvert that by using it not as a means to exploit another culture, but rather, to inform the deductive reasoning skills needed to investigate and dismantle an existing power structure. The game also tackles a lot of related subjects, from capitalism and labor issues, to disability, slavery, free will, conspicuous wealth, interventionism, complicity, privilege, tech-enabled exploitation, and ethical resource allocation. And it does so in a way that is not designed to always make the player feel comfortable. In that sense, Heaven’s Vault actually contradicts a lot of what I learned in anthropology class, despite how authentic the linguistic decoding process may seem.

(But if that seems too serious, here's the Yogcast instead.). Minor updates!:
Just a small update to Heaven's Vault today:

- Six will now sail you all the way to a moon if you've been there before

- Added a confirmation step to hoppering away from a moon after Six asks you

Edit: added patch notes for 2017.09.29.2. Update - Balancing Tweak, More Ancient:
New update to Heaven's Vault is all things that are hard to spot, so here's what you (won't) see on playing:

The big one is the balance: towards the mid-to-late game on some runs, when the map starts to get very broad, we've found the game being a little reluctant to provide the key artefacts that open up new sites to visit. This update tweaks the balance to make key artefacts more frequent if you're looking for somewhere new to explore.

Tl;dr, if in doubt; get a drink with Timor; show your stuff to Tapi; or talk to Huang - we've made them more helpful in tight corners: assuming you can keep them on side, of course...

We've also added:

- more words of Ancient, and some more long phrases, particularly for those into their third / fourth runs

- lots and lots and lots of little story fixes, polish, and specifics. Thanks to everyone who emailed in!

Meanwhile, here's the Guardian naming Heaven's Vault as it's Game of the Month...[www.theguardian.com]:

"...a game of quietly forceful consequence.... the way Heaven’s Vault builds its sense of meaning and magnitude will stay with you far longer than the latest apocalyptic zombie-popper.". The Space Birthday Update: The Daily Challenge:

This post is about a feature of the free Space Birthday Update, out now! See this post for the details.

As of tomorrow, Heat Signature has a Daily Challenge! Each day there's a special character with 3 missions that are the same for all players, and leaderboards to see how you did compared to your friends. Compared to other games, Heat Signature's daily challenge is quicker to play: it only takes about 15 minutes. And we're doing a few other things differently too:
