Heart Valve Surgery: Types and Procedure

A heart valve surgery replaces or repairs a valve that is excessively small or does not shut properly. Valves must function correctly to allow blood to flow in the proper direction via the heart. Options for heart valve procedures include minimally invasive, open or vein access to the heart. The recovery may take a couple of months, depending on the surgery.

Dr. Sujay Shad, the best cardiac surgeon in Delhi, explains that the heart contains four one-way valves placed in a sequence that allows blood to circulate normally without obstructing it. However, regurgitation (when blood leaks backward through a valve) and stenosis (blood flow is restricted as the valve becomes narrow) can occur when either one or more heart valves fail to function properly.

Types of Heart Valve Surgeries

There are two kinds of heart valve surgeries.
Valve repair surgery is performed to restore a damaged or malfunctioning valve while maintaining most of the patient's own tissue. The mitral valve is the valve that is repaired most commonly. However, repair surgery can also cure tricuspid and aortic valve issues.

Valve replacement surgery replaces the defective valve with a biological or mechanical (carbon or metal) valve. Since all valve replacement procedures are biocompatible, the patient's immune system will not reject the new valve.

There will be tests that the patient has to undergo. These tests will help the doctors identify the valve disease's type, extent, and location. The test results will assist in finding the best treatment.

Furthermore, there are other factors that the doctors may consider are:
The patient's heart structure.
Their age
Other medical conditions
Their lifestyle
When Should One Consider Heart Valve Surgery?
A valve condition might have been inherited or acquired due to a narrowing, leak, or stiffness. One should get treatment if they have the following symptoms:
Chest ache.
Difficulty in breathing.
Fainting.

Pre-Heart Valve Surgery Instructions

The patient may have a chest X-ray, electrocardiogram, or echocardiogram followed by a CT scan, lab tests, and heart cath a day before the surgery.

The healthcare provider will shave an area where the surgery takes place.

The patient must avoid eating anything after midnight on the day of the surgery.

The healthcare provider will prescribe the surgery.

During surgery, the surgeon can have a machine take over the lungs and heart of the patient.

The heart doctor will replace or repair the heart valve based on whatever surgery.

Post Surgery Care

After surgery, the doctor may transfer the patient to an ICU (Intensive Care Unit) for close monitoring.
Then, the patent will be in an ordinary room. One can stay hospitalized for about seven days.
The patient's heart rate and blood pressure will be monitored by machines attached to them. Fluids may be drained through tubes in the chest.

After the surgery, the doctor will advise them to eat, drink, and move as soon as possible.
The patient may begin with little walks around the room or anywhere else while gradually increasing the distance.
The doctor may refer the patient to cardiac rehab, a carefully controlled workout programme.
