Whether you just want to tune in to see your own dog's breed compete or want a play-by-play of all the action, here is our guide to the 143rd Westminster dog show.

The main dog show will air on FS1 (Fox Sports 1) from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Monday, February 11 and Tuesday, February 12. But some other activities precede the main event — for more on those, see below.

Best in show will be awarded at the end of the competition on Tuesday, February 12. Whichever dog is chosen will have to beat competition from six other groups.

Here's a brief overview of how that works: the seven Westminster categories are designated by the American Kennel Club's classification of various breeds into herding, hound, working, sporting, non-sporting, toy and terrier groups. After dogs compete for best of breed on both Monday and Tuesday, the winner of each of those larger groups advances to the Westminster final.
Where else can you watch and stream the Westminster dog show?
You can watch the main dog show competition on Fox Sports 1, but there are other components of Westminster.

When is the 2018 Westminster Masters Obedience Championship?
The 2019 Westminster Masters Obedience Championship is a separate part of the dog show on Monday, Feb. 11, running from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pier 94.

Obedience is the newest portion of the dog show, added in 2016. As with agility, mixed-breed dogs are eligible to compete in this portion of Westminster.

Last year, for the third consecutive year, Heart, a labrador retriever from Columbia, Warren County, won the obedience championship.

The competition depends upon a strong bond and communication between dog and owner, requiring that dogs move with their owner-handlers on command, heeding their directions to sit or retrieve objects. The dogs also have to demonstrate mastery of "scent discrimination" by picking up objects that carry their owner's scent.
