Godzilla II - the ending prepares the world for a showdown against Kong

Warning: full spoilers below for Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Godzilla has been terrorizing / protecting the human world for 65 years, and in the most recent installment of the franchise, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the monstrous reptile opened the door to a whole world of "Titans," while also preparing the path to the epic showdown between two monsters of 2020, Godzilla vs Kong.

Since 2014's Godzilla, Legendary has been building their so-called MonsterVerse. Kong: Skull Island followed suit, and now things have taken a crescendo in the latest monster-filled movie that features Godzilla alongside some of the most famous Kaiju from Toho's catalog, including King Ghidora, Mothra, and Rodan. And still, despite the appearance of those Titans, there was one whose absence was notable ... but just because Kong did not participate in The King of the Monsters, it does not mean that he was not mentioned.

Next stop: Skull Island
In fact, near the beginning of The King of the Monsters there is a mention about the island of Kong where it is explained to the audience that in the five years since Godzilla fought in San Francisco the reptile has not appeared again. But the world is now on the lookout for the existence of other Titans like Godzilla, including the one that inhabits the prehistoric island (which fans know is Kong's location). If you have read the comics of the series then you will know that Monarch has been active since the mid-1940s in reaction to the discovery of the first gigantic mutant creatures, but it was not until 1976 that they sent a group of explorers to Skull Island that they met the man. great ape known to locals as Kong.

That connection to Monarch is the key, as once the credits roll, the audience receives an exposition recap about different reports and news that unfold the story into the future. It turns out that Dr. Emma Russell's (Vera Farmiga) plan - to free the Titans and bring a new balance to Earth with them - actually worked. After Godzilla helps contain the beasts and formally becomes King of the Monsters, with all the other Titan kneeling (or dead) before him, it is revealed that Earth and its inhabitants - monsters and humans - are thriving.

It's here that Godzilla: King of the Monsters really offers some substance about the next installment in the MonsterVerse franchise, revealing that for some unknown reason the Titans are being pulled over to Skull Island. It seems that there is some kind of increased activity there that is attracting the monsters of the planet. That mysterious revelation could itself easily explain why Godzilla ends up heading to prehistoric paradise and inevitably trading blows with its most famous (and territorial) inhabitant.

There also appears to be some clues about the action taking place on Skull Island in the official description of Godzilla vs. Kong, who reads: "As Monarch embarks on a dangerous mission into uncharted territory and uncovers clues to the origin of the Titans, a human conspiracy threatens to destroy creatures, good and bad, from the face of the earth forever." .

The true villain of Godzilla vs. Kong?
This also seems to connect with the post-credits scene at the end of King of the Monsters , in which Charles Dance's character Jonah Alan buys one of Ghidora's three heads. Could it be that the eco-terrorist has turned his back on the Titans and is part of a plot to build the cyborg Mecha-Ghidorah to destroy them? One that Godzilla and Kong will have to team up against to destroy?
