That's what the start-up Roofscapes is attempting to change. The organization, launched by three students from MIT's master of structure plan, is using wood structures to turn the common pitched roofs of Paris into accessible green spaces.

The spots would give ways to grow local food, point biodiversity, reduce steadily the temperatures of buildings, increase quality of air, increase water preservation, and give citizens a new way to escape the thick urban clusters of modern times.

We see that as a means to uncover the options of those houses,” says Eytan Levi MA'21, SM'21, who co-founded the business with Olivier Faber MA'23 and Tim Cousin MA'23. “These materials were not getting used otherwise but may have a highly positive contribution to the worthiness of the buildings, the surroundings, and the lives of the people.

“It was generally very important to people to work well with as little contradictions to your prices as you are able to when it comes to environmental and cultural impact,” Faber says. “For people, Roofscapes is a way to apply a number of our academic learnings to the real world in a way that's tactical and impactful, because we are going into that whole matter — pitched ceiling adaptation — that's been dismissed by old-fashioned architecture.”
