Fun Facts About Dolphins Few Knows About

While you may think you know much about Dolphins, these fun facts about dolphins prove that you need to relearn what you know about these mammals.

  • Dolphins have names – this could have gotten you by surprise. It is funny that these mammals have names, but it has been scientifically proven that dolphins indeed have names. They use whistles to identify each other.
  • A dolphin has ten times the hearing capacity of human beings. These mammals mirror human beings very closely, with some features surpassing the abilities of human beings. Their high sense of hearing helps them to make up for their lack of smelling sense.
  • Dolphins give their calves' tails first and are the only mammals known for that. As opposed to what many mammals are known for in giving birth to their calves head first, dolphins make it the other, which is their natural way of giving birth to their calves.
  • Dolphin eyes can move separately from each other and are a few mammals known for this feature. It is helpful in cases of severe danger and helps them surf their environment very fast and take action. Some of these more outstanding features are specific to help these aquatic mammals survive the harsh aquatic environments.
  • Dolphins have hearing and eating holes differently. Unlike many aquatic animals that have a combined mouth and ears, dolphins have separate holes for these functions. It helps them to avoid drowning and boost their hearing capacity as they lack the sense of smell. For this reason, dolphins hear ten times more than an adult human being.
  • The largest known dolphin is the Killer Whale. However, the name killer does not mean it's dangerous. There has been not a single human death recorded by a killer whale in the natural environment besides the controlled environments.
  • Dolphins are great divers and can go up to 1000 miles deep in diving. This phenomenon is recorded and scientifically proven. Their unique features enable them to reach such depths.
  • Dolphins can hold their breath for up to 30 minutes. This is the recorded maximum time that dolphins have been found to hold their breath. After this, they have to come to the surface of the waters to take another breath. However, in the 30 minutes of holding their breath, dolphins can dive up to 1000 miles and return to the surface.
  • Dolphins are mammals who give birth to live claves and provide milk to the calves for up to 3 years. They have hair when they are born, and they are warm-blooded. For this reason, they thrive best in warm temperate waters, but some are found in pretty cold water zones.
  • A feature known as melon in front of their heads helps in the echolocation. However, as opposed to the blowholes, the teeth are used to receive the sound waves or echoes that bounce back from the echolocation. These unique features maintain the dolphins' security and make up for the lack of a sense of smell.
