From Corporate Executive to Entrepreneur

With a long-standing career in the information technology (IT) sector, Michael Rustom has made a name for himself by closing deals and building a robust network of prospects and clients. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Michael Rustom Toronto attended Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, before embarking on his career as an account executive for Sun Microsystems of Canada Inc., where he managed the company’s relationship with BMO Financial Group, one of Canada’s oldest and largest banks.
In 2005, Michael shifted his focus from client relations to sales, taking a role at Scalar Decisions. His exceptional performance led to a series of promotions, ultimately becoming Vice President of Sales. During his time at Scalar Decisions, he successfully expanded the company’s clientele into new sectors, including mining, financial technology, and regional government.
In 2020, Michael transitioned to the role of Vice President of Business Operations at PCI, a Canadian aviation and aerospace company. He oversaw all front-office operations, including sales, marketing, human resources, engineering, and consulting. Despite thriving in this position, he felt the growing urge to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions.
Just two years later, Michael founded his own consulting firm, Michael Rustom Inc., where he assists clients in executing successful IT projects and offers seasoned advice on sales strategies. Since launching his business, he has found both professional and personal fulfillment, acquiring numerous new accounts and building a company that reflects his values and vision.
Recently, we caught up with Michael to discuss his transition from a corporate executive to an independent consultant and business owner.
Q: What prompted you to leave your corporate career and start your own consulting business?
Michael Rustom: I had been contemplating starting my own company for a while. About two years ago, I decided it was time to take the plunge. I felt I had gained enough knowledge and experience to venture out on my own and establish a brand that bore my name. It was the right moment to take control of my career and chart my own course.
Q: How has the transition from corporate executive to independent consultant been for you?
It’s been fantastic. However, if you had asked me six months in, my response might have been different. The initial learning curve was steep. I was well-versed in IT and business-to-business sales, but the administrative side of running a business was new to me. I had to familiarize myself with the tax code for small businesses, which is quite different from what applies to individuals. Plus, in contrast to a corporate environment, I had no one to turn to for support. Once I accepted that I was solely responsible for everything, things began to fall into place.
Q: What has been the most rewarding aspect of running Michael Rustom Inc.?
The most fulfilling part is completing projects for new clients and seeing their satisfaction. Knowing that my work has made a significant impact on their business is incredibly gratifying. It often leads to strong relationships and repeat clients. Overall, Michael Rustom Toronto the sense of autonomy and self-direction I have as the master of my own destiny is immensely rewarding. I love that I’m working to advance my own interests rather than anyone else’s—that’s a fantastic benefit!
Q: What skills from your corporate career have proven most valuable in your consulting business?
Every skill I acquired has been valuable. The training and experience in client relations, strategic planning, and sales leadership have been essential in this new chapter. My extensive knowledge of information technology has also played a crucial role. I’m grateful to my former employers for equipping me with these tools.
Q: For those dreaming of leaving the corporate world to start their own business, what do you enjoy most about being your own boss?
It’s not the carefree lifestyle some might envision—at least, not yet. For now, I’m working hard to complete projects, win new clients, and establish the reputation of Michael Rustom Inc. It demands more effort than simply filling a corporate role. However, the freedom to make my own decisions and shape my business according to my vision and values makes it all worthwhile.
