Face Seal - Floating seals are characterized by two identical metal friction rings mounted one on top of the other and centered in their grooves by two rubber components that practice a uniform axial pressure between the seal and the housing. The first metal ring remains stationary in its housing while the second, in rotation, ensures sealing by creating friction between the two components in contact.

Face Seals and Mechanical face seals can be designed with a graduated surface or a monolithic seal surface. In either case, the surface of the sacrificial seal is often made of carbon / graphite. This material provides excellent operating properties but is relatively weak mechanically. The graduated face design uses a metal swivel stand to transfer torque to the Face Seal.
