In 2019, United States goods and services trade with Mexico totaled about $677.3. That number declined due to the pandemic, but Mexico continues to be one of our biggest trade partners. The country joins China, Canada, Japan, and Germany as the top five partners in foreign trade.
The trade surplus with Mexico is significant. In 2019, the surplus had a value of roughly $3.1 billion. But that's not all. The US exports to Mexico that same year supported an estimated 1.2 million jobs.
Mexico served as the second-largest export market for the United States in 2019. That year, the US sent about $256.6 billion in goods across the southern border. While that number was slightly less than the previous year, it marks a 99.1 percent jump from the last decade. Mexico took roughly 16 percent of all United States exports in 2019.
What did we export to Mexico? The biggest category that year was machinery. Machine exports had a total value of $45 billion. Following that was electrical machinery, mineral fuels, vehicles, and plastics.
Agricultural exports to Mexico totaled about $20 billion, with corn leading the way.
Exported services had a value of $32.9 billion. Some of the leading services were travel, transport, and intellectual property.
Once again, Mexico came in second as the largest supplier of goods and services to the United States. Total imported goods coming from our southern neighbor had a value of $358 billion. That figure marked a four-percent jump from the previous year and a 102.6 percent jump from the last decade.
The most significant import categories were vehicles and machinery. They amounted to $101 billion and $66 billion, respectively.
Other sizable sectors included electrical machinery, optical and medical instruments, and mineral fuels.
Agricultural imports had a total value of $28 billion, with fresh fruits and vegetables making up the largest category.
