Remember that Darjeeling is closer to the exit points either at NJP or Bagdogra airport and can be reached in 3.5 hours, while it takes 4.5 hours to reach these places from Gangtok. And that too, you may have to pass some serious road blocks, traffic jams and so on.

So, weigh your options well, and decide which place to visit first. If you are hard pressed for time and may get into trouble while returning from Sikkim, then visit Sikkim first. Otherwise, Darjeeling should be your first stoppage. You will have the added advantage of taking the wonderful route via the Mirik Lake.
