In the green woods of Silver Falls, Oregon, Aaron Hallam, a trained assassin AWOL from the Special Forces, keeps his own brand of wildlife vigil. After Hallam brutally slew four deer hunters in the area, FBI Special Agent Abby Durrell turns to L.T. Bonham-- the one man who may be able to stop him. At first L.T. resists the mission. Snug in retirement, he's closed off to his past, the years he spent in the Special Forces training soldiers to become skilled killers. But when he realizes that these recent slaying is the work of a man he trained, he feels obligated to stop him. Accepting the assignment under the condition that he works alone, L.T. enters the woods, unarmed--plagued by memories of his best student and riddled with guilt for not responding to Aaron's tortured letters to him as he began to slip over the edge of sanity. Furious as he is with his former mentor for ignoring his pleas for help, Aaron knows that he and L.T. share a tragic bond that is unbreakable. And, even as they go into their final combat against each other, neither can say with certainty who is the hunted and who is the hunter.
An FBI deep-woods tracker captures a trained assassin who has made a sport of hunting humans.
As I read Dostoyevsky's novel Crime and Punishment, I realized how theses ideas are retaken and renewed in the new William Friedkin film The Hunted, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio del Toro (Connie Nielsen does not count...or does she?).

According to Dostoyevsky, there are two kinds of men, ordinary and extraordinary; the latter has in a way license to kill in order to improve the course of the world. At the beginning of the film we hear a psalm from the Bible in the own words from Hallan (del Toro), expressing how he sees himself as Abraham's son and was ready for his sacrifice, in simpler words...he wanted to die in the hands of his father/creator Tommy Lee Jones. So, in the meantime, he starts rescuing deer from hunters by becoming a hunter of hunters...since he is now above the food chain as the ultimate predator thanks to his skills. Now, these are deep thoughts here that make the topic of the film indeed a deep one, on the other hand, this statement is lost somewhere in the middle of the plot.

Many have complained about del Toro and Lee Jones' characters, but say, I mean, look at them fighting, isn't that what acting is all about? Do you really think they learned to fight like that in one day or just by putting their heels together and wish it? It requires good physical and mental strength to put that together...so please...acknowledge that... cut them some slack.

Yes, I accept it has many plot holes, and the pace is somewhat slow, but, there have been worse movies which have been praised by the audience. **Possible Spoilers Ahead***

As a fan of Tommy Lee Jones since ROLLING THUNDER and of Benicio Del Toro since WAY OF THE GUN, I was waiting with bated breath to see this flick when its poster appeared in the lobby of my local theater. Never mind that the ill-conceived and strangely posed one-sheet made the two main characters–deadly enemies in the movie–look like a couple, for crying out loud; any movie starring Jones and Del Toro had to be worthwhile.

One would think so, anyway.

I can't argue with the previous reviewers' criticisms, especially regarding continuity, lack of realism (the wolf footage), a cliche at the beginning, or dialogue (particularly what will become known as Del Toro's "Chicken" Monologue, if it hasn't already).

I'll only take a little space disputing claims that FIRST BLOOD was better than THE HUNTED. At least THE HUNTED merely fails as a film and fails it's own audience; FIRST BLOOD was not only putrid but it severely deprived those who wanted David Morrell's fine novel directly translated to celluloid.

What I will speculate on is whether THE HUNTED, as released, was what director William Friedkin originally intended.

Down through the decades many directors have seen their films re-worked, re-edited, or cut apart by greedy distributors and tyrannical studio execs. This has happened to Grade-Z artists like Andy Milligan on up to the big boys like Blake Edwards and Sam Peckinpah, or Stanley Kubrick before he wrested complete control. Friedkin himself is no stranger to this mistreatment; both SORCERER and RAMPAGE were hacked before their release. I strongly suspect that THE HUNTED started out as a more logical, sane and coherent work than what eventually hit the screen. Or the fan...

If my theory is correct, a restored version will hopefully surface, like Peckinpah's own print of PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID, and become available on tape or DVD. If I'm wrong, and the director of THE FRENCH CONNECTION and THE EXORCIST really intended to make the travesty that recently played in theaters, then I hope Friedkin retires and never darkens a studio doorway again. As in "The Edge," in which Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins were stranded in the wilds, you can earn a wildernesssurvival merit badge just from watching.
