Kind of harkens back to the little tiff that Prince and Radiohead had a couple years ago. Prince did a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” which made its way onto YouTube. Prince demanded that YouTube block the video and Radiohead (the copyright owners of the song) argued that the decision to request that the song be blocked is not Prince’s to make and demanded that it be unblocked. This all spawned off some debate as to who’s in the right.
Just saw that a link in SonicState.COM that Prince has declared (or should I say that he has decreed?) that the Internet is COMPLETELY “over”. This comes from an interview he granted for the English paper the Daily Mirror.
“The internet’s completely over,” says Prince. “I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.”
It’s a very amusing and sometimes disturbing interview.
Regardless, I’d chalk this up as yet another milestone in the Internet complicating things for the old-guard music industry. I just wonder how many copies of 20TEN end up as coffee coasters after they’ve been ripped and added as seeds on the Pirate Bay?
I have absolutely nothing against Prince at all – he’s got some fantastic stuff in his catalogue. I can’t say that I agree with the arrogance, pompousness and self-importance he brandishes, but he does know how to put together a record or two.
The new CD will be released only as a free physical CD – and there will be no Internet downloads available, anywhere in the world . Prince has banned his music from YouTube & iTunes.
I especially like the “no Internet downloads available, anywhere in the world” bit.

Don’t know if Prince’s posse has isolated his Royal Purpleness from the rest of the world the past decade, but I’m looking forward to seeing how this latest work is going to be kept from the torrent networks. Or is Prince just thinking that the rest of the folks on the Internet are going to blindly abide by his proclomation?
Ah … why do the ramblings of Prince never get old?
Prince … You’re too Funny.
