When Frank Castle's family is murdered by criminals, he wages war on crime as a vigilante assassin known only as The Punisher.
Based on the Marvel Comic, Dolph Lundgren is Frank Castle an ex-cop who lives in the sewers and acts as judge, jury, and executioner to the city's criminals in retaliation for the unpunished murders of his wife and kids. Frank's ex-partner Jake (Louis Gossett Jr.) finally catches up with the vigilante as he tries to stop the Japanese mob, which is trying to take over the city's mafia operation.
Wait they made a Punisher in 1989? For reals? For reals, and this one had a total B-Movie feel to it. Honestly, the B-Movie thing is vibing so hard in the first five minutes that it almost shakes you out of your seat.

That isn't a bad thing, it certainly gives the film a dark and gritty feel to it that works well for the subject matter. In fact, the low budget gives the movie the atmosphere that the other Punisher movies only wished they could achieve.

It's a dark movie and Dolph Lundgren has dark hair...and it still seems to work.

In fact, almost everything about it seems to work in it's favor.

It's no where near as bad as the critics stank it was. Its a movie about an insane super-hero serial killer and even in the comic books that is really what the Punisher is, a well armed man that went insane and started killing bad guys in massive numbers.

It plays insanely well with the cheap B-Movie feel of The Punisher 1989 and stands alone as the only really good Punisher movie anyone has made. Where To Start Okay Dolph Lundgen Is One Of The Worlds Worst Actor This Movie Made It Fact Not A Rumor This Punisher Movie's Plot Is That He Tries To Save These Italian Mobsters Kids From The Yazuka Okay He Was Supposed To Punish The Guilty This Movie Did Not Do Any Punishing Except To Me This Movie Is No. 7 On The Worst Comic Book Movies Ever Made This Movie Could Suck Star Trek 2009 Oh My God I Could Go On For A 1000 Words About How Bad This Movie Really Is Okay Flaws 1) Punisher In The Comic Books Doesn't Have Super Speed However He Caught Up To A Van 2) His Family Died At A Mob Execution Not A Car Bombing 3) He Didn't Have The Skull 4) Punisher IS Supposed To Look Scary I Don't Think Nowaday's People Wouldn't Be Scared Of The 50's Biker Look & Many More Okay So People Might Say Hey I'm Being Harsh But I Am A Huge Fan Of The Punisher & This Movie Sucks So Bad I Cannot Put It Into Just One Comment So No One Should Be Punished Except The Filmmakers They Were Causing The Crimes Here

After Castle justifies his actions as The Punisher to Berkowitz, Castle is freed from custody by Franco whom demands Castle helps him get back Tommy and takes Berkowitz hostage as insurance and Castle reluctantly agrees to help Franco rescue Tommy from the Yakuza and proclaims that he will kill him after he helps Franco rescue his son and terminates the Yakuza.
