I just found this review from December 1996: www.gamespot.com/saturn/action/powerslave/review.html?om_act=conver... (Note: Unlike in Europe, in Japan and the USA the Saturn version was released before both the Playstation and PC versions. So at the time and place this review was written, Exhumed was a Saturn exclusive.) That's right, a 5.4/10.

It's a truly entertaining and satisfying experience to solve the many problems and to find a use for a newly acquired item. Furthermore, the enemies provide worthy opponents (damn those giant wasps and fire beasties) and the platform nature of many of the levels is challenging, but always fair. The experience may seem a little long in the tooth for some players, but there's definitely a great game here if you're up to the challenge. Add to this alternative endings and the secret 'Team Dolls' for expert players to find and we're talking about a 'must buy' game for anyone who's a fan of this genre.

The game itself, has as much in common with an adventure game, as it does with a 1st person shooter. The whole 'hub' structure - along with the collection of object/weapons to aid your progress, is very similar to Hexen. However, because of the fluidity of the game-play and the structure of the levels, it seems far more satisfying. The controls are tight enough to allow for a great level of accuracy (you'll need it on some of the later levels) and some of the level designs are inspired (like exploring the water-filled catacombs or tip-toeing around laser beams). Nearly all of the items are needed eventually to solve the games many varied levels and the search for the radio-parts will keep you interested until the end (I know it's somewhere nearby, I can HEAR it!!).

I am most struck by the line "Ultimately, think of this game as Doom with a plot (sort of), a few camels, and the proverbial mother lode of jumping spiders." Having not yet managed to get my hands on the game myself, have any of you who have played it have a rebuttal to offer?
Problem detected right there. Jeff Gerstmann was notorious in the Saturn Era for rating Saturn games lower for no good reason other than it was on the Saturn. He gave Virtual On a low score too saying something along the lines of "Play this stupid game for 10 minutes, then go play a real game like [insert lame PS1 game here]."
Powerslave (Exhumed) panned by Gamespot!?

From beyond the edge of darkness the warrior cries revenge.
Well, I must say that this game IS awesome. I'd probably have to say it's the best corridor shooter on the Saturn. 5.4. How much of this game did they play? Simply because whilst the game initially seems like just another doom clone there's just so many great designs and Ideas in it.
