Hysteria grips California in the wake of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. An assorted group of defenders attempt to make the coast defensible against an imagined Japanese invasion, in this big budget, big cast comedy. Members of a Japanese submarine crew scout out the madness, along with a Captain in Germany's Kreigsmarine (Navy).
It's been six days since the attack on Pearl Harbor. Panic grips California, supposedly the next target of the Japanese forces. Everywhere in California, people are suffering from war nerves. Chaos erupts all over the state. An Army Air Corps Captain, a civilian with a deranged sense of Nationalism, civilian defenders, and a Motor Pool crew all end up on the trail of a lost Japanese sub that has picked Hollywood as their own target. Will these people be able to defend their homes? Will they be able to preserve the safety in California? Will they be able to get a hold of themselves?
Great cast, great script! Steven Spielberg's best comedy ever and IMHO one of his best movies. Belushi is on the money and has spectacular performance. It also contains one of the best stunt/fight/dance scenes ever. Great choreography, fast paced, hundreds of extras, and they play the music from the "Quiet Man" in the background during the fight.
I believe that "1941" could well be the worst film ever made. This flick is unbearable. Unwatchable. You keep going because you are so sure it has to improve. John Belushi is in it, for Pete's sake. Surely there must be a laugh or two in here somewhere. It is there. About 40 minutes in, John is flying a plane over the grand canyon and can't open a bottle of soda, so he breaks it and pours it into his mouth and all over himself. This is the only time I laughed in the whole movie. It's supposed to be a comedy, folks. The young romantic lead gives one of the worst acting performances I have ever seen. It is as if Spielberg deliberately set out to create the most putrid celluloid scat the world had seen. I can't believe the person responsible for E.T. and Jurassic Park made this abomination.
1941 represents an appalling waste of filmmaking and performing resources. As one would expect, Spielberg, who directed "Jaws" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," sustains a high energy level. But the energy is expended on material that is pointless at best and occasionally hateful. [15 Dec 1979, p.C1]
The Director's Cut of this early Spielberg flick runs approx. 27 minutes longer than the old Theatrical Version and features several blocks of new scenes throughout the time. Nearly 27 scenes were added or altered and sometimes alternate material was used as well.
