Counterdrone Protection in Law Enforcement

Each year, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) undergo a rapid evolution in terms of functionality, durability, speed, and longevity. Taranis, one of the most advanced drones today, has a top speed of 1,127km/h and a 9.7m wingspan, making it nearly invisible to radar. This is just an example of how far drone technology has evolved in the past years.

Commercial drones are no exception to this phenomenon for the better or worse. With the ability to record video or still images in daylight or infrared, UAS operators can conduct surveillance and monitor certain places from afar. Their payload capacity is another feature that can be problematic in the wrong hands. Hobby drones, for instance, have payload capacity between 0.3kg and 2kg. Certain models of professional drones can carry up to 12kg of weight.

With such capabilities, more and more criminals and terrorists use drones to carry out illegal activities. In 2020, a woman was caught using a drone to transport drugs from New South Wales to Victoria to evade COVID border closures. In 2022, Indian authorities are struggling to combat terrorist activities that use drones to deliver arms and drop sticky bombs. In the same year, Police Scotland discovers that criminals are using drones to scout rural areas before committing theft. The list goes on.

Counterdrone laws might already exist, but enforcing those laws can be difficult for law enforcement due to drones’ advanced capabilities, including their superior agility. This situation calls for advanced counterdrone protection (C-UAS) to prevent crimes, protect officers, and preserve the integrity and privacy of sensitive information and crime scenes.

As an Australian/US publicly listed company focusing on RF sensing, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Sensor Fusion, Electronic Warfare, Rapid Prototyping, and MIL-SPEC manufacturing, DroneShield takes the responsibility to develop C-UAS solutions to aid law enforcement in combating drone threats.

The DroneShield C-UAS technology provides real-time monitoring support and instant alert when detecting a threat using the state-of-the-art multi-sensor feature. It allows operators to detect, identify, and record information about rogue UAS devices and their activities. The ability to monitor air space gives more complete protection beyond the capabilities of a camera, gate, or wall.

Once the threat has been detected and identified, the DroneShield drone defence system can ground the offending drone or force it to return to its operator. The system can pinpoint the location of the offending drone’s operator if needed.

DroneShield C-UAS equipment supports integration with existing security protocols to ensure public safety and the protection of sensitive information. We provide portable and fixed counterdrone defence solutions to accommodate all types of operations.
