John Constantine is approached by Det. Angela Dodson who needs his help to prove that her twin sister Isabel's death was not a suicide. The dead woman was a devout Catholic and Angela refuses to accept she would have taken her own life. She's asked Constantine for help because he has a reputation for dealing with the mystical. In fact, he is a demon hunter whose sole purpose on Earth is to send demons back to the nether regions. John himself has been to Hell and knows that he is destined to return there on his death - but hopes his good deeds may find him a place in Heaven. As he looks into Isabel's death, he realizes demons are trying to break through to the human world, and his battles lead him into a direct conflict with Satan.
An ex-legend of exorcism finds a new mission about a dangerous sacred object that has been stolen. A woman meets Constantine, the exorcist, and asks him to help her solving the mystery about her twin sister who, according to her knowing of her relative, would have never killed herself.
CONSTANTINE is, in essence, two separate movies. One is a thrilling and sophisticated horror film, acted by a vibrant and well-selected supporting cast and directed by a young and promising new feature film director. The other is an atrociously written and clumsily executed action turkey, a shameless ego platform for a schlocky actor and for some big-name producers looking to make a quick million at the box office. When they are presented as a two-hour film, we see elements of both, often in alternation, sometimes simultaneously, but never coherently. The entire movie feels unbalanced, as if the scriptwriters worked in total independence of one another during the writing process.

CONSTANTINE is an adaption of the Hellblazer comic book series - which regrettably, in the wake of stinkers like DAREDEVIL and THE PUNISHER, only detracts from its credibility. It is set against the background of the eternal struggle between Heaven and Hell, which has reached a detente of sorts - the servants of both kingdoms may no longer directly combat one another on the mortal plane, a condition referred to as "the Balance". Enter John Constantine (Keanu Reeves), an exorcist who has dedicated himself to banishing all the demons present on Earth in violation of the Balance. If you thought Reeves was intolerably wooden in THE MATRIX trilogy, you ain't seen nothing yet. This is, without a doubt, his most uninspired performance to date. His lines are mumbled and incoherently modulated, his delivery is lifeless and unconvincing, and his attempted smoker's cough is the fakest and most irritating I've ever heard. It doesn't help that, apart from a few ingenious smart-arse remarks, his character that might have been scripted by a six-year-old. Constantine is a role that requires the gritty sophistication of someone like Ray Liotta or Wesley Snipes, and it is searingly euphemistic to say that Keanu Reeves was miscast.

Perhaps all that saves this from becoming a glitzy "Keanu stinkfest", as valleyjerk so appropriately expressed it, is Rachel Weisz. She transcends the limitations of the half-baked script, which sometimes feels like it was thought up at three in the morning, to put on a brilliant characterisation as Angela Dodson, a deeply religious detective whose twin sister commits suicide under chilling circumstances. Desperate to arrange her a Catholic funeral, she seeks Constantine's aid. Thankfully, most of the dialogue is left to Weisz hereafter, while Keanu sticks mainly to the demon-shooting as they unravel an Infernal plot to begin a reign of Hell on Earth, orchestrated by the unhinged angel Gabriel (Tilda Swinton). While, upon reflection, the plot is quite well-written and entertaining, the incoherent script, which ranges in quality from mind-numbingly cretinous to incisively lucid, means that it unfolds rather jerkily. It's a bumpy ride, to say the least.

Despite its crippling faults, CONSTANTINE is certainly a beautifully-presented movie, with creative and immerse cinematography, a good soundtrack by Klaus Badelt, and stunning special effects. And, although the screen-hogging Keanu is woeful, the supporting cast is excellent. Djimon Hounsou, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Gavin Rossdale and Peter Stormare, who almost single-handedly steals the show as Satan himself, all act brilliantly. Shia laBeouf gives us yet another energetic performance as Constantine's neglected young sidekick - he is beginning to shake his teen-star sensibilities and come into his own as a supporting actor. Regrettably, they all have too little screen time to breathe life into the film. Rossdale, Vince and laBeouf are killed off; Stormare doesn't appear until the end; Hounsou and Swinton make appearances close to the beginning, and are then simply forgotten for forty minutes or so.

While CONSTANTINE is not just another schlock-horror action flick, it may prove to be the downfall of Keanu Reeves' career, and it's been an embarrassing start for director Francis Lawrence. While Lawrence's skillful direction cannot quite rise above the appalling script in CONSTANTINE, hopefully he will have another chance to prove himself in the near future. Hopefully, this film has garnered some well-deserved Hollywood attention for Peter Stormare and Rachel Weisz, and forced the big production companies to think twice before rolling off another comic-book adaption. Overall, it's a higher-brow VAN HELSING - it should entertain you for a Saturday afternoon, but as a serious film, it stinks. 5/10. This film has got to be one of the best films i've seen recently, combining a great story line with brilliant special effects, and despite what some people say excellent acting by all. I recommend you go and see this one, especially if you like a film that will make you think and question a few things. Well done to the director as well, i say this as i have heard that previously he has only directed things such as music videos, and that this is his first film, i hope to see more from this guy! Don't listen to those that say this film is a poor and inaccurate take off of the comic, it may differ in a lot of ways but thats no reason to put the film down. Most people go to see a film purely for what they have seen advertised not because they are expecting an exact replica of the comic!!, so don't be put off this is an excellent film in all aspects.
What Constantine offers is a deceptively thoughtful tale tricked up like an action movie; it's beautiful to look at but even more lovely to ruminate over.

"Passive" by A Perfect Circle. Near the end of the movie, Constantine is attacked by Gabriel so he commits suicide to lure Lucifer out. (As stated earlier in the film, Constantine is probably the only person that Lucifer would personally appear to collect.) Knowing that Lucifer is powerful enough to stop his own son Mammon from taking over Earth, Constantine informs him that Mammon (with help from the archangel Gabriel) is in the next room preparing to take over and rule Earth. After stopping Mammon and Gabriel from completing their ritual, Lucifer offers to thank Constantine with one wish, to which Constantine requests that Angela's twin sister Isabel be spared and sent to heaven, instead of remaining in hell. Lucifer grants Constantine's wish, and just as he is about to take Constantine away in hell with him, he is interrupted by a divine light that begins to take Constantine to heaven (reward for sacrificing himself in exchange for Isabel.) Realizing that Constantine's selfless sacrifice just duped him, Lucifer grabs Constantine and resurrects him, curing him of his cancer, and leaving him on Earth. (The black substance that Lucifer is holding in his hands is Constantine's lung cancer.) After resurrecting him, Lucifer tells Constantine that he now has a second chance to commit another sin strong enough to damn him to hell. At the end of the movie, Constantine - now free of lung cancer - decides to chew gum instead of smoking. Its a golden crucifix crafted onto a shotgun that's also attached to a flamethrower. After Beeman was killed, Constantine found his notes and formulas of how he made weapons and created the crucifix-shotgun. He only uses this when he fights demons though. He is a half-human, half-demon form. Constantine refers to him as a "half breed." He was sent by Lucifer into the world in order to scare Constantine and convince him that he is going to hell. Beeman, his deliveryman and trusted friend, brings him holy artifacts and valuables. He offers John:

  • Bullet shavings from the assassination attempt on the Pope.

  • Crystal balls filled with holy water from the River Jordan to burn the demon.

  • Small matchbox of screeching insects from Amityville that can disturb a demon's hearing.

  • A golden flamethrower filled with dragon's breath.

The golden crucifix-shotgun is crafted by Constantine after Beeman is killed.

Constantine carries a copy of The Holy Bible with him.

In his fight with Balthazar, Constantine uses golden brass knuckles with crosses on them.

In the demon street scene with Angela, Constantine lights part of the holy shroud of Moses. Gabriel's supernatural powers and qualities are very much taken away, and is left to live as a mortal in earth susceptible to pain and all the other vicissitudes of mortality. This is highlighted when Constantine punches the archangel who then screams in pain and bleeds, and John remarks "this is called pain, Gabriel, get used to it". Not really. Constantine's demeanour, his way of life and his chronic smoking are relatively accurate, but his appearance and nationality are completely different. He does have a taxi driver friend called Chas, and has an association with an African-American voodoo expert called Midnite, although Chas is his own age and is physically tougher than Constantine is. Gabriel's fate is also similar in the comics.

The plot is based loosely on the Dangerous Habits storyline, as Constantine is dying of cancer and is required to outwit the devil, but the similarities pretty much end there.

One of the biggest changes is changing Constantine from British to America. This can be overlooked depending how much a fan of the comics you are. Yes. After all the end credits have rolled, there is a brief scene in which Constantine visits Chas' grave at the cemetery. After a while, when John is about to leave, we see Chas, who has ascended as an angel, standing on his gravestone, and then flying onto the sky.
