I've bought this game three separate times. I still play it from time to time after all these years - there's still something new about each game, oddly enough.. Definitely my favorite civilization building game ever, the enhanced edition is very underrated. Much more fun that simcity. Awful game, nothing like the original, which is why i had purchased it. Would not reccomend this game, if you was looking for something simple and enjoyable. Feels like they have focused more on graphical design and camera movement engine, than actual game play and enjoyability. extreemly disapointed.. It will play the start of the game just fine, but just as your city gets going it will start crashing. Repeatedly. This game is a royal Bastet and I highly recommend Set-ing it aside lest it make you a Nut. After playing this game I was really not Hapi. The gameplay is an absolute blast and it's one of my favorite genres of game, but it just doesn't work.

XP SP2 Compatibility mode doesn't help - causing the game to get 'stuck' in the menus, nor does running as an administrator, running at minimum graphics, running it with single core affinity, running it in a Windows XP virtual machine with a single core. Running it with the sound off, plane clipping to minimum and with XP set to Windows 2000 compatibility mode running as administrator the game gets a couple of minutes in. Enabling DEP for every program on the system and specifically exempting this game doesn't fix it. There is no difference between running windowed or fullscreen at 1024x768.


For reference, my rig:
i7 5930K @ 4.1 GHZ, water cooled and stable. No base clock adjustment. Overclock was dropped to test the game in WXP virtual machine with win2K compatibility. It didn't work.

Some people have reported success getting this game - which is really, really fun when it works - working with the GoG DRM/Steam-free version. I recommend trying that or looking for unofficial modifications to the original 13.0.1 executable if you have it on Steam. It's the only thing I've yet to try, but I don't like running strange executables from the Internet.. The game Hangs up and stops working. Have to hit ESC to go back to meau and clear it to make it woork Not Fun........ a nice civ light game I have been able to replay it over time, again and again.. I'd recommend this even more IF the scroll wheel would actually scroll in, it scrolls out no problem, but ya need to use the keys to scroll in.
It would be even better if it didn't keep crashing n i'm using a high end i3, GTX 960 n it still crashes.
This was released in 2008, it NEEDS updates,,, like thats gonna happen.. amazing game, I've owned a disc copy since 2004 and probably sunk more hours into it than any other game I've played. If you like games that let you create a living, breathing world, this is definitely for you.

That said, it's really not for everyone, the game moves at an incredibly slow pace and while easy to learn, can be difficult to master. It can be, at times, too realistic for it's own good. Your people cannot be controlled or ordered around, and the only way to get them to do what you need them to do is to create a culture in which they would want to do it, which can be difficult at times, and definitely frustrating when your bricklayers ignore certain buildings in favour of others, or when your labourers decide they'd rather sit around and do nothing that quarry stone. However, there's nothing more satisfying than mastering the game, and I'd highly reccomend this to anyone who thinks they have the patience for it.. It's difficult to explain why I'm not recommending this game, because in the end it has a lot of value. But, dunno, it's too slow and didn't resonate with me. I tried many times to finish it, but it feels more like a guessing game than a real strategic.

That said, the game has something to say and if you have some spare money and like to risk, I'd give it a try. At least, it's very different from every other game of the series (Caesar, Pharaoh, Zeus...). The game insta-crash after that I press the icon to open it...And I feel mad because I had this game when I was a child and I LOVED it, so when I saw it was on Steam I just thought: "holy♥♥♥♥♥♥I want it, just to play again this fabulous game", and then, after I downloaded it, I opened and... I felt so disappointed...
Now, I lost 7 Euro for a game that doesn't works and no one will give me back... It's a shame that Steam doesn't find a solution and just sell this game without to warn the customers...
