In Seattle, detective Quentin Conners is unfairly suspended and his partner Jason York leaves the police force after a tragic shooting on Pearl Street Bridge, when the hostage and the criminal die. During a bank heist with a hostage situation, Conners is assigned in charge of the operation with the rookie Shane Dekker as his partner. The thieves, lead by Lorenz, apparently do not steal a penny from the bank. While chasing the gangsters, the police team disclose that they planted a virus in the system, stealing one billion dollars from the different accounts, using the principle of the Chaos Theory. Further, they find that Lorenz is killing his accomplices.
Seattle PD captain Martin Jenkins reinstates suspended hero detective Quentin Conners because Lorenz, the alias of the ruthless gangsters' leader who holds staff and clients hostage in a bank, demands that interlocutor, but gives him a 'baby-sitter', brilliant rookie Shane Dekker, son of a SPD hero killed in action. Lorenz tricks them to escape, apparently without any loot, although a Saudi prince keeps a fortune there, but an ICT expert works out the crooks just needed to get in to install an untraceable virus. Shane's erudite suspicion Lorenz is using 'chaos theory' proves crucial in combination with a series of murders on accomplices and apparently dirty cops. The bloody trail finally makes a startling twist.
In mathematics, chaos theory describes the behavior of certain dynamical systems – that is, systems whose state evolves with time – that may exhibit dynamics that are highly sensitive to initial conditions (popularly referred to as the butterfly effect). As a result of this sensitivity, which manifests itself as an exponential growth of perturbations in the initial conditions, the behavior of chaotic systems appears to be random. This happens even though these systems are deterministic, meaning that their future dynamics are fully defined by their initial conditions, with no random elements involved. This behavior is known as deterministic chaos, or simply chaos.

I copied that from Wikipedia just because that theory is used in the main plan of one of the characters. The film begins with an event that changes the life of Det. Quentin Conners (Jason Statham) forever and eventually he is suspended of the police. Later we have an apparently normal bank robbery that ends with the return of Conners, as a desire of the criminals, and with a mystery about the real intentions of the criminals. And there we have the main characters, Conners of course and his new partner Shane Dekker (Ryan Phillippe) looking out for the criminals having different theories. I really like that part of the film mostly because of a cool performance of Statham, teaching some lessons to the younger inspector, being a tough guy but even creating a friendship with him and a good work environment for his detectives partners. Also I like how the began to have their own different theories, even thinking that all was just a revenge against Connors but the film has many twists with many little details, of course all based upon the chaos theory and although the very end has the classic mayor twist, like in "The Usual Suspects" or in "Lucky Number Slevin", is still cool to see Statham coming to Mexico!

Well I must add that I never hear a thing about this film until about one week ago that was finally released in theaters and its big publicity ends with commercials in football games, I mean in a corner kick or in a foul the narrators says: "Jason Statham stars in Chaos. Soon in your theater", you know the classic stuff. I write that because I was a victim of the publicity so suddenly I really wanted to check this film, mostly just for Statham and because there are not many other options in commercial theaters right now. So I convinced my family for going to watch it but I said to them that maybe it was going to be the typical Hollywood bad action film and I was just another victim of the publicity but eventually we have a pleasant surprise with this good, not great, film. Yes, pure entertainment! Chaos is set in Seattle in Washington & starts as three masked, armed men walk into an international bank & proceed to rob it. An emergency alarm is pressed & the cops are on the scene in no time, with three armed robbers inside the bank & lots of staff & customers the robbery turns into a hostage situation. The lead robber Lorenz (Wesley Snipes) makes contact with the local police & ask's to speak to disgraced cop Detective Quentin Connors (Jason Statham) who is currently suspended after a previous hostage situation he was dealing with ended in an innocent woman being killed, returned to active duty Connors is partnered with rookie cop Detective Shane Dekker (Ryan Philippe) & takes charge of the hostage negotiations. However things go wrong & the robbers escape, then it seems they didn't actually steal anything from the bank & ulterior motives may be at work as the cops try to figure out the meaning behind all the chaos...

This Canadian, English & American co-production was written & directed by Tony Giglio & I have to say that I was actually quite impressed by Chaos, I had never heard of it before until I saw it was on telly & I am pleased I took the time to watch it. Now the pairing of the always watchable Jason Statham & the has-been Wesley Snipes scream low budget direct to video awfulness but I was quite surprised to find a thriller full of twist's & turns than a straight forward action flick, in fact Chaos has so many plot turning film changing twist's that it's sometimes hard to keep up & put everything in context & relation to what has gone before but overall I liked the twist's. I certainly felt there were one or two in here that I didn't see coming & the big reveal involving Snipes & Statham's character's at the end were really well handled & did quite literally turn Chaos on it's head. The first thirty odd minutes of Chaos are the most action packed, from the opening car crash to the bank heist it's a nicely paced mystery but then it does slow down for an exposition heavy plot although if you pay attention & get into the film then surely the effort will be worth it with all the satisfying twist's that keep you guessing & go against expectation. I also liked the ending in which the bad guy wins, maybe it's just so un-Hollywood for the bad guy to be smarter & better than the good guy & maybe because it's so rare to see I liked it more but there just aren't too many films such as Chaos where the bad guy does win & it felt refreshing. Having said that Chaos isn't perfect, it's a little bit long & if your a criminal carrying out the perfect plan why do you phone the cops up & keep giving them clues about what your doing, your identity & how to find you?

Surprisingly a little short on action set-pieces there's a motorbike chase, a few shoot-outs, a house gets blown up & a few other assorted little moments but nothing overly spectacular. The violence isn't excessive & the film looks nice enough.

With a supposed budget of about $12,000,000 this was filmed in British Columbia in Canada despite being set in Washington, although shot in 2004 Chaos apparently didn't surface on DVD in either the US or UK until 2008 for some reason. The acting is alright, Statham is always quite fun with his one-liners while Snipes has a half decent role even if he's not in it that much.

Chaos is a film that maybe tries to be a bit too clever for it's own good with lots of twist's that you will either get a kick out of or won't, at least the makers tried to do something a bit different & keep the audience guessing. Overall as an action thriller with plenty of twist's I liked it, it was much better than I expected in fact.
