Breast Reduction Surgery:Treatment for Enlarged Breasts in Women

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast Reduction or Mammoplasty is the surgical procedure to get a proportionate size of breasts by removing the excess fat & issues. When we speak of enlarged breasts, we have to understand that not only is it a cosmetic problem for a woman but also it really impacts the kind of lifestyle she leads. Women having large breasts will have symptoms like:

Neck Pain

Chronic shoulder pain

Back pain

Difficulty in maintaining hygiene

Recurring infections in the breast crease

Inability to perform gymming or workout

So, not only it reduces the woman’s confidence regarding her body shape but also impairs the quality of her lifestyle. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia. A woman can resume her daily activities in 2 weeks after the surgery.

Ideal candidates for Breast Reduction

Large breasts with areolas and nipples pointing downward.

Noticeable difference in the size of breasts.

Having neck pain or shoulder pain because of the weight of the heavy breast.

Skin irritation under the breasts.

If a woman feels she has unappealing body proportions because of the breast size.

Post-procedure care

Wear a supportive bra day and night.

It is advised that the patient sleeps in the upright position for at least a few weeks after the surgical procedure.

Lifting heavy stuff is prohibited after the procedure to not put any force or hurt the site of surgical procedure.

High intensity exercises, weight training and workouts should be avoided for 6 weeks after the surgery.

Driving should be avoided for a couple of weeks.

Healthy diet should be added to the routine.

Smoking and consumption of alcohol should be strictly avoided.

Common concerns that women have regarding the breast reduction surgery

What will be the effect of surgery on lactation or breast feeding?

Breast reduction entails removal of a significant amount of breast tissue. However, the ability to breastfeed is never completely absent after the surgery. Yes, there might be a reduction of about 30-40% but a woman is still able to breastfeed her child post surgery.

Does breast reduction surgery cause any changes in nipple sensation?

Temporary changes in nipple sensation involving either one nipple or both the nipples, are fairly common. However, most of them recover in a period of weeks to months which varies from patient to patient. It also depends upon the extent of reduction and the technique used. Hence, permanent loss of nipple sensation is a very uncommon phenomenon.

Which kind of scars will this surgery leave?

Depending on the size of the breasts, sagging of skin, it can be either a vertical scar (extending from a nipple areola downwards towards the breast crease) or a T-shaped scar (it has a vertical component and horizontal component along the breast crease). These scars settle very well with time.

If one is looking for breast reduction surgery in Mumbai, then they may consult Dr. Parag Telang. He is Mumbai’s most preferred board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon.
